File Error report on a W80 camera....

Having just bought a new W80 digital camera i wanted a memory card to go with it. I decided to buy a 4GB memory card from someone on E-Bay, when i inserted the Memory Card in the camera and took a number of trial photos all appeared well..... It was only when i tried to view these photos on the camera that i realized everything was not ok..... Some of the photos were missing, some of them were blurred, others only showed half of the photo and the rest just showed a blue screen with the words ' FILE ERROR ' written across it... I found somewhere that describes why this happens, and they say it is because the memory cards are counterfeit... have a look at this site and see for yourself.... MagicGate-Cards-Exposed_W0QQugidZ10000000001236041">http://reviews.ebay.com/FAKE-Sony-Memory-Stick-Pro-Duo-MagicGate-Cards-Exposed_W0QQugidZ10000000001236041 If this link doesn't work just look on E-Bay and see what they have to say direct....Hope you find this useful and you can pass it on to others......Martyn I bought a new memory card from Best Buy and have the same problem,(file error when reviewing some pictures) so I took out the memory stick and took pictures to internal memory, and got same problem. It isnt the memory stick.. it is something else. Occasionally it will show a bad picture.. half the screen shifted, etc.

yes, it started with the original memory card I was using. I suspected a bad memory card based on what I read here, so bought a brand new one at Best Buy, with same results. That is when I tried taking pics right to the internal memory.. and the same thing happened.. so i ruled out the memory stick being the problem.. and it must be the camera itself.

k.. since you had many errors on the memory card you bought, did you check the camera, whether it works good with some other memory card..???

SOURCE: File Error report on a W80 camera....

I had the same problem.
First, I changed my Memory-Stick, because after taking about 60 pictures the famous file error appeared.
Secondly, if the camera shows the famous "file error" this can be resolved - at least in my case - by taking out the battery for at least 4 hours.
So, if your camera is not in use, always take out the memory-stick and the battery and the problem does not appear. This helped in my case.
However, this is in my opinion anything but satisfying. I had a Nikon Coolpix nd never experienced any problems like the "file error" of the sony digicams.

Hi sir
#1 Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com
# 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
# 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
# 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
# 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
# 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

Just put in new san disk 4gb memory card and receiving error message - memory card error. I unlocked memory on card itself (that little gray sliver that goes up and down) What gives

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.

You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

Lots of file errors, O also now can't copy files off, says i/o device error

try using a memory card with 2GB or below
the camera might be having some problems reading the 4GB that you have

if you connect the camera to your computer and file error still appears that means that the memory card is corrupted and you really need to format it

before you do make sure that you have a copy of the files saved in the memory card

*formatting the memory card will delete all the files saved in it

go to MENU> SET UP > FORMAT

My sony dsc-w80 shows file error when turned on

Your memory card might have failed.  Try removing the card and reinserting it to see if it is just a momentary contact problem.
Most cameras are supplied with skimpy memory and it is often upgraded when new. This means you might have the original smaller memory card that you could use to replace the one currently in the camera to see if the error message is then gone.
