Turn it on it says Set UP using stylus. But nothing happens.

My Palm 71 does not work anymore. All it does it turn on and Set Up comes on the screen. It says use the stylus to tap anywhere on the screen to continue. I do that and nothing happens.
What is wrong? Is it worth fixing?

The digitizer is defective and needs to be replaced.

You can find digitizer parts in ebay or other on-line companies, at reasonable prices.

Regarding the labor cost, depending of the repair shop you choose, it may be cheap or expensive.

Zire 71 screen does not sense stylus input -- even after performing a reset.

HI,
Try doing a hard reset. This will erase everything on your zire and restore it to brand new settings. To do a hard reset make sure you have everything backup on your palm desktop. Here are the steps for the hard reset:

1. Hold down the power button and then depress the small hole in the back with the tip of your stylus2.gif.

2. Continue to hold them both in until you see the Palm2.gif logo.

3. Let go of both of them and then follow the onscreen directions. You will want to answer yes and use the 5 way navigation button on the bottom of your pda and hit up so that is completes the reset. After that you will have to set up your touch screen and go through the tapping the target. After you have gone through all this then do a hotsync. It should clear up your problem. Best wishes.

Palm Zire 71 handheld does not come on, did a hard reset, nothing

Confirm that both the cradle and the PDA ports are clean and free of dust or dirty.

Also, check your AC wall adapter to confirm that is working. The output should be +5.0 volts DC. Any repair shop has a multimeter need it to check it in no time.

If everything appears is OK, then confirm the PDA is properly placed in the cradle, and that the PDA is not loose on the cradle, indicating that the port contacts are not touching.

Palm Zire 71 works when it is on the sync but not off

You are right
there is a component on the main board of your PDA
that is most likely fried
power from the PC chord will go to the PDA
but when you unplug it the machine will look to the battery for power
and the electricity will convert to heat at the point of that fried component
on the more thin Palm models you can feel it without taking the case off

and it will "forget" any new information you input due to the type of memory it uses

Zire won't come on

You need to follow the procedure to calibrate the digitizer.

If the screen does not respond to the stylus, then the digitizer is defective and needs to be replaced.

Zire 71 digitizer

I have the same problem and discovered that the right side of the screen had "spread". When I draw a line from the left to the right using Note Pad, the line ends up about 1/4 inch above the stylus. What I had to do is touch the stylus about 1/8th of an inch above the center of the digitizer target on the right side.

Screen insensitive to stylus

Have you run the digitizer app, which is located in Preferences, and recalibrates the digitizer? If it is not the digitizer problem , it may be the stylus you are using.. read this: http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?s=2291eadf13e4feda45b1303d5ba7089e&threadid=3182 By the way, about Palm's "repair service", take a look below: "... I can sympathize with you. Six months after I bought a Palm Zire 71 I had exactly the same problem, it would not respond to the stylus. I sent it in for repair (fortunately I got someone in India who spoke fairly good English). They set it back after a week or so and a month later I had exactly the same problem again. (They did return my original unit.) Again I had to send it in and they sent me a replacement that works so far. I had a previous experience with Palm's "repair service" where they again did a repair that only lasted a few weeks. ..."
