Hold the Fn Key while powering on the system, see if the diagnostics run and you get any video from the diagnostics. Also try Fn + F8 to enable an external monitor. Last check the Lock LEDs to see if the CAPS LOCK or SCROLL LOCK LEDs are on all the time, if they are then there is a system failure

I have a 1cm verticle stripe on my Dell Studio 1737 ?

Your lcd screen is going bad. You can verify this by plugging an external monitor to your laptop. if the external monitor shows without the vertical stripe it means the video card is good but your old screen is bad. If the external monitor shows the stripe then it means the video card is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if thedisplay shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crtmonitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vgaport. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will showon most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systemswill require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold downthe FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thruF12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will havethe icon of a display.

My dell 1464 no display when on off agine

No Display? If the laptop seems to boot up except the screen is black try this:
Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

Screen is rolling constantly

. Sounds like its time for a new lcd screen. Try plugging an external monitor to the laptop and see if it behaves the same way. If the external monitor scrolls, then you more than likely have a Video Card problem. If the external monitor displays without scrolling then your lcd screen is bad.

Hi, I have a Dell Latitude D830. The display was off. I can connect extrenal monitor for current work. Please advise if I need replace display or motherboard ? Thanks Alex

Before replacing anything verify that your laptops display type didn't get changed to VGA out only.
look at your function keys (usually top one or two rows ) and look for the key that has a pc/monitor icon. with the machine powered up and connected to the external monitor press the function (FN button lower left of keyboard) and the video/monitor button at the same time. most laptops have 3 settings:
laptop display only, external display only and laptop and external display. Press the FN/Display button at lease 3 times waiting 3-5 seconds between keystrokes. I have seen this many times where the FN/display button keys are hit inadvertently.
Typically if the motherboard or video card fail the external monitor would not work either.

Dell latitude d60..the laptop wont display without external monit

Seems that you have a loose LCD screen cable connection. You will need to disassemble the laptop & make sure the LCD screen cable connection is tight.

Monitor does not work, computer starts up, dell prompts load, windows prompts load then screen goes black. i can hear everything loading but no display.

connect an external monitor on your machine and check if display is ok on the external monitor. if yes, try to re-install your video driver and check if display is ok on your laptop.

if both doesnt have display (external monitor and laptop's display) i suspected your lcd display is faulty.
