80% of the picture is black

My JVC Model AV-27260 Serial No.08622084 when turned on 80% of the picture is black. Sometimes the whole picture will come back on for a few minutes and then go black 80% again. I did turn the closed caption off but that did not help Would appreciate any suggestions...Thank You

The 80% I'm talking about,is the screen itself turns black. The 20% is a regular picture or program that is running. Thanks for answering so quickly

I need clarification about the 80% thing. Is this a black box perfectly centered on the screen or the top or bottom or one of the sides too small? If it is perfectly centered then you do have a problem with the close captioning. That is the symptom of being in one of the text mode functions of close captioning.

Ok, if the video is present around the outside of the black box you have a problem with close captioning. It is stuck in either Text 3 or Text 4 mode. The options for close captioning are CC1, CC2, Text 1, Text 2, Text 3 and Text 4 and of course OFF. Apparently the close captioning is stuck on or is not being properly shut off. Better read the owners manual to see if you are missing a step when turning off close caption.

I have a jvc tv , old, model no av-48wp34....turned it on hsd sound pic everything normal , changed channel, picture went 80% black , stil have sound

HI Bonnie,

If you have a good picture when it's on then it points to a dry joint on the circuit board, It is probably round the switching transformer section or the eht section but please be aware of the very high voltages stored in the capacitors and tube.

If you need any more help don't hesitate to contact me.

Tv went Black and wont come on now?

Sounds like you were having a power failure in the community,, we call it a brown out. just turn it off and unplug it,, I'm not sure if this is what the problem is.. I had this to happen years ago on a magnvox console.. I will check and see what I can find out for your model tv..

Audio ok, but Video goes from color to black.

the tv turns on fine, but after 5 - 30 min or so, "sometimes MORE " the picture all of a sudden go's black. Sound is ok it is 100% loose contact problem. 1 please check for any connector or print for loose. 2 in signal processor ic there might be loose. remember there is no component failure.

JVC AV-32730 36" picture problem..

From what you describe, a solder joint has probably cracked loose in a power supply or deflection circuit, which is quite common. Since you do sometimes see a good picture, all of your major components are fine. Repairing cracked solder joints is a very easy procedure and definately worth fixing on a 32 inch TV. The first 2 digits of the model number indicate the size of the TV.
