Replacing a condenser fan in centralized A/C

On of the common problem with centralized A/C unit is a bad condenser fan. I have known people who called an ac technician to fix their ac because of a bad condenser fan and suggested replacing the whole unit! Costing them a lot of money when all it needed was a 50 dollars condenser fan! If the condenser fan do not run or it runs only when you give it a push, it'sbad. You will also notice that it is vey hot. When replacing a condenser fan you may want to replace the starting capacitor too. Replacing a condenser fan is not very hard, just make sure that the power to the ac unit is turned off at the breaker box. Confirm that the wires are not live by using a meter or an ac tester. The fan motor are held with brakets sometimes just screws. Most fan you can buy that has reversible rotation by just reversing the plug. Make sure it is blowing upwards. If not reverse the rotation. So if you notice that the unit is not putting out cold enough air and you went outside and noticed the compressor running but not the fan, turn off the AC right away and do not use it untill the fan is replaced. Running the unit with a defective fan can damage the compressor caused by overheating.

Check to see if you are getting power to the fan motor. Do this by shutting off the car and then disconnecting the cannon plug to the condenser fan. Start the car and turn on the AC. Take the plug end from the car and test for power with a simple voltmeter or trouble light circuit tester. If you have power then you have a bad AC condenser fan. If you don't have power you probably have a bad relay. Check the relays in the fuse box under the hood. If the compressor does not run it can be a bad relay or a very low Freon charge. Good Luck.

Hummm. A bit difficult to solve this problem. Seems like the condenser outside is not working, I mean the fan of the condenser. Looks like you have a wall A/C and a wall A/C always have condensers outside the house and near the A/C. Have you checked if the fan is spinning? I don't think the compressor is at fault but check it anyway. You should be able to hear the compressor running either in the wall unit or in the outside condenser housing. The only heat you should feel is from the condenser itself. If you blows warm air, that means the fan is working, if not that means the fan is not working. But don't be confused with the fan not working because in winter time sometimes the fan is not working and some times it does. As I said, it's a difficult problem to solve but at least start with checking the situation with the fan in the condenser.

Normally the ac fan (in front of the condenser) will run as soon as the ac is switched on. This condenser gets hot when the gas is being compressed and needs to have the heat removed for the system to work IT will switch on regardless of the ambient temperature as it is connected directly to the ac compressor clutch. IF you are referring to the heater fan inside then it will only work with the heater fan on or with both ac and heater on but will not always work with just the ac on.

Make sure the cooling fan is coming on when the ac is turned on,if so,see that the condenser is getting enough air,no fins stopped up in the condenser or radiator,if all this is fine,then you need some ac gauges on the ac system to tell if there is a restriction in the condenser.

It is unlikely that the water pump is causing the trouble you describe. The large hex behind the fan is what you would turn to remove the fan clutch from the water pump shaft. This fan clutch is supposed to detect heated air coming through the AC condenser and radiator and engage the fan more positively with the water pump shaft when more air needs to me moved to cool the radiator and AC condenser. The fan clutch could be bad or the AC system may not be properly charged--either of these conditions could cause the problem you describe.

Need to make sure the fan is acually running with ac on.If so see if the fan is pulling air,or pushing air.Is the fan on the out side of condenser or inside?The fan ,if on the inside of condenser(engine side)it should pull air.If it is on the out side of the condenser it should push air.If all this checks out,then see if the fan is running slow,it should run very fast.Is there another fan?Is it working?It to should be running with ac on.
