You may have thread stuck in the raceway, take the bobbin case out and take the hook out if you have a front or side loading bobbin and check.

My needle will not go up and down

hi Tamara.
you have not said the make or model.but try this.
Make sure the push your bobbin winder to the right then to the left and see if that solves the problem. Your Old Machine has a Clutch & It Needs to be Released. The Clutch is this little dial that is inside of the hand wheel. In older machines, it was used to wind the bobbin without the needle going up and down.17 Jul 2015

Needle position wheel on Elna Super bought in 1969 won't move

I suspect your Super needs some degunking internally, the old dust,, fluff and oil dries up inside and goes hard and this can eventually gum up unused parts. You could take off the top and have a look, usually a couple of screws holding down the top blue cover. Use a cotton bud and denatured alcohol and clean up around the needle centring wheel internally, cleaning and some gentle movement may free it up. I've just bought a Pfaff 1471 and it has "locked-up"... the needle won't go up and down and the hand-wheel won't move. Help please! :)

Do you have a bunch of material and thread stuck in the feed dog? Sounds like. This will sometimes happen. I'm afraid the only thing you can do is carefully work with a seam ripper or small scissors to get it all out. Be careful working. You will damage this part of your fabric, but you can take the seam allowance in a small bit. You will probably have to remove fabric & thread from underneath, through the bobbin area, too.

Once you have all of this cleared, the needle and wheel will turn. I suggest you try and take the needle out of the shaft and try pulling it out of the fabric before you start your work, too. That way, you won't risk breaking it and have a piece fly off at you.

It's frustrating and will probably make you curse at the machine-it's happened to everyone who sews at one time or another, and will happen again, I'm afraid.
