Does the flash ready indicator also stay off, after you opened the flash and pressed the shutter release button half?
Because that could indicate there is not enough power in the battery to charge the flash.
If the light comes on, and still the flash does not fire, there would be a serious problem. My guess; that only can be solved at the service centre.
To be sure nothing else is wrong. Charge the battery first.
Then switch on the camera, open the flash, select fill in flash and press the shutter release button half. If the flash ready indicator lights, press the shutter complete and see if it works.

Succes

No power and cracked display is it related?

Dale, If your charger starts flashing very fast, or no light is coming on at all, something is wrong. No light coming on, could mean it does not get any power. But it also could mean the battery has died.
If you have a multi meter, you could test what voltage the battery has. Most batteries are 3,7 or 7,2 volt. when you use a multimeter, the reading in DC should be something like 3,9 or 7,5. On the meter the outage should be a few percent higher than what is printed on the battery. As soon as the meter indicates a voltage just a little (or worse a lot) under the printed value, the battery must be replaced.

No powe

Most of the time it is the battery, or the battery contacts. Make sure, when you place the battery on the charger, the charger acts like the manual says. If the charger does not starts with a slow blinking light, something is wrong. If it does not give any light, check the power (cord and outlet) on the end of the charge, the light should burn continues.
When you are not sure the battery is good, try mother battery.
It also can be the contacts are not free or oxidised. Check the contacts on the battery and in the camera, if they are clean and shiny. Just a spec of dust, or a very small pice of paper on one of the contacts cab spoil all the fun. You could clean the contacts with a dry cloth, or a cotton swab. Never use anything sharp in or close to a camera.
After you replaced the battery, try again. If nothing (not even a new battery) works, contact a Nikon certified service centre. Or visit the dealer.
