The range doesn't depend on the Wii at all. It depends on your router. On the box it should give you a range for the wireless internet. Generally your Wii can just detect the network and connect. If that doesn't work tou have to get the wepkey for your network and set it up on your Wii. You can access the wepkey on the computer you set the network up on.
Windows Vista is compatible, the question is whether your wireless router is compatible. To know that, you'll need to provide your router number. www.nintendowifi.com gives pretty good solutions and you can search by router and error code.
I'm not sure about distance but it's probably about 100 feet... it varies depending on your router and how many walls are in the way. Basically if you're one room away in any direction (including on another floor) it will probably work, but it's not guaranteed. Anyway, post your router model number and I or someone else will tell you where to go from there.

How to fix: Power cycle your router; redo the connection settings on the Wii and try again.
Did this connection used to work but has suddenly stopped? "Power cycle" your router and modem. To do this, unplug both the modem and the router from the power outlet. Wait a few minutes, and plug the modem back in. Wait a couple of minutes for the modem to initialize, then plug in the router. Try to connect the Wii, Nintendo DS, or Nintendo 3DS online and test for proper response.
Erase your old connection settings on the Wii and set up a new one, as your router's settings may have changed since you last connected. We suggest following our guide to create a new connection file and start over. If at the end you still need help, you'll find contact information to reach our specially-trained representatives.

Step by step instructions to connect your wii to the internet can be found here
Hello alanobrien89 and welcome to FixYa. Here are a few solutions that may help you. You may want to make there are no discs in the Wii and turn the console off for a couple moments. Next restart the console and insert the disc to see if the issue is rectified. If your grandson insertd one disc after another as opposed to two discs overlapped at the same time there is a possibility the disc motor or laser lens could have been pushed or otherwise damaged which would require service from Nintendo. Give what I suggested a shot a few times and if that does'nt seem to work you'll have to contact Nintendo. It is possible to repair it yourself however it requires knowledge of the hardware and special screwbits also known as a gamebit. Here is Nintendos Customer support number in the event my solution does not work. 1-800-255-3700 The best of luck to you.
Hi,If you’re using WEP or WPA for your router’s security, log into your router by typing its IP address in your internet browser and make sure your WEP or WPA key entered in the Wii matches the key in the wireless router. The WEP Key can only use characters 0-9 and A-F. If your router allows more than one WEP Key to be entered, make sure the key in slot #1 is the active key. The Wii can only use the key in slot 1.If you entered the correct key, then check to see if MAC filtering is enabled in the “access control, access list, or network filter” section of the wireless router. If MAC filtering is enabled, you will need to enter the Wii’s MAC address into the “allowed” list for MAC addresses. If none of these were the problem and your connection used to work, try power cycling both the router and modem by unplugging both from the wall. Wait a couple of minutes before plugging the modem back in. Wait another couple of minutes for the modem to initialize, then plug the router back in and wait until the router initializes. Ensure that your wireless router has the latest firmware installed. You will need to go the router manufacturer’s website to download the firmware. If Wii Error Code 52031 is still a problem, try changing the broadcast channel of the wireless router to 1 or 11. This can help increase download speed. You an also try manually entering the Wii’s internet settings. You will need to first get the network configurations from your PC. On your PC, click “Start” and then “Run.” Type “CMD” into the field that appears to open a new window. Type “IPCONFIG/ALL” and press “Enter” to display a list of internet settings. Locate the settings asked for by the Wii console during the Manual Setup process and enter them. Good luck
Error
Code: 52130
There appears to be
an issue with your wireless router's firewall.
Make sure your router is not listed on our "known incompatible
routers" page, by clicking
here.
Try a "Manual
Setup" with the Wii console (how
to), using your network's IP configuration settings. To
access these settings:
On your PC, click "Start" and then "Run."
Type "CMD" into the field that appears to open a new window.
Type "IPCONFIG/ALL" and press "Enter" to display a list of internet
settings. Locate the settings asked for by the Wii console during
the Manual
Setup process and enter them.
Power cycle your router and modem by unplugging them both from the
wall. Wait a few minutes, and plug the modem back in. Wait a couple of
minutes for the modem to initialize, then turn on the router. Try to
connect the Wii console online and test for proper response.
Disabling your router's wireless security may help the Wii console's
online connection. Consult your wireless router's manual or check with
the router manufacturer for more details. Please note Nintendo provides
these recom
mendations as a resource to our consumers; it is up to each consumer to
determine if adjusting their router's security settings are the right
choice for their home network.
It is possible that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is not
compatible with the Wii console. For instance, if you need to login
with a user name and password when you try to go online for the
first time after restrarting your PC, your ISP is likely not
compatible. Please contact your service provider for more
information.
