Hitachi Projection TV Model 46EX1B

I have an Hitachi Projection TV 46EX1B purchased around 1991, which has held up very well until recently.  While watching a program suddenly the picture was lost but the sound was still present.  I turned the set off and turned back on later and it worked fine for approximately 1/2 hour and shut off again.  First of all could you tell me what might be the problem and is it worth the cost to repair?

This is in regards to my Hitach 46" 46ex1b PTV:

I know what you said in the last response, but my problem is not nearly as complicated, but I fear the worst.
My TV(same make and model, etc...) turns on w/ no picture/ sound loss, but when it turns on off, and try to turn it back on, all I hear is a click inside. THis happened before, but I hard reset it a couple of times and it was fine, but I left it on the video setting, never turning it off. When it got cold, it did this too.

    Can I rescue it?
    What can I do?
Do I need to enter into the new millenium and pop for new tv?

The most common problems I have found in this model is solder joints going out in the vertical and on the driver transformer.

I would say the picture tubes are probably starting to go out by now and the technology is changing.

Look at the new sets. LCD and DLP are using LEDs.

Manufactures are beginning to equip their sets with ATSC tuners that bring in High Def. stations by using a pair of rabbit ears.

In a little over a year most signals must be High Definition and the government is supposed to send out checks for about 40.00 to help fray the costs of converter boxes to convert the older set.

So, my thoughts are, the set is about 17 years old. The cost of repari and the repair itself would be like putting a bandaid on it.

Capacitors by now are beginning to dry out and solder joints are starting to open up, not to mention that the picture tubes are getting weak and changing luminance and fading..

Most sets I repair at this age have future repairs.

  Check out the new technology.

Our tv recently went out and I think the lamp light came on. Where can we get a lamp for our 60vx500 hitachi tv? What size do we get?

You can purchase a lamp at The first thing I want you to try is to unplug your TV from the wall for 40 MIN, the reason why is that you night got a small power surge and have some garbage in the TV processor, and that is common with Hitachi. That should reset it all back to normal.

Broken screens on 53'' Hitachi rear-projection TV

I think it would likely work if you trimmed it evenly around the sides in order to maintain the central position. Focus may have to be adjusted but thats all.

it sounds like your blue convergence ic is getting weak you need to replace the ic's STK392-110 and you should replace both because when 1 is bad the other will go real soon. They are inexspensive at the sight I posted and you will also get free tech online support if you purchase them there.
