To get a wireless internet connection for Xbox live, you will need a high-speed Internet connection such as cable or DSL and a router, gateway, or wireless access point (WAP) that is compatible with Xbox live. If your XBOX360 console is first generation, you will also need a Xbox 360 wireless networking adapter. If you are using a wired connection, you will need a network cable. Plug the network cable into your router and the other end into your Xbox 360. On your Xbox 360 console, navigate to "MY XBOX" and then select "system settings" Next select "Network settings" and then select "Test Xbox Live connection" Select YES when the prompt appears asking you to update your software. After you become connected, there are two choices: Free membership of Gold membership. Once you are connected, navigate back to "My XBOX" and select your avatar and then select "Join Xbox Live" If you need any more help feel free to contact me. Thank you for using Fixya
You can try fixing this using Xbox360 repair guide that covers almost all xbox 360 problems, you can get a copy from here http://xbox360repairguide.com
Connect to the Router,
Under the Security tab, select Services, then add, give it the name XBOX TCP/UDP, set start port as 3074 and end port as 3074, set type as TCP/UDP, click apply/ok. Do this again, giving it the name XBOX UDP, start port 88, end port 88, type UDP, then apply settings.
Now go to Firewall under the Configuration tab, under incoming click add, now select the service XBOX UDP/TCP from the drop down menu. select forward to specific IP address or similar and type in your Xbox's IP address e.g. 192.168.1.5, click log never, then apply ok. Do the same for XBOX UDP and your again click apply. That's it! you've successfully opened the necessary ports on your Router and told your Router that any incoming info on those ports should be sent to your Xbox.
You cannot use the netgear wi-fi adapter as the xbox 360 will not be able to detect it. I suggest buying the wi-fi adapter specifically manufactured for the xbox360
