Hello, the mini dv is the port that carries images and video to a television for example, or a computer, but will not help to transfer data to a computer. the firewire port does transfer data to the computer though, this is the reason why it is ackowledged as an external hard drive when you plug it this way. The best is to plug both, this will give you the opportunity to watch on your desktop, and to transfer data

Macbook pro doesnt recognize the panosonic pv-gs9 when connected with firewire

I take it that your macbook pro has imovie on it. If you open up imovie and plug in your camcorder it should recognise the camcorder and give you access to putting the movie onto your mac. Have a look at http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/ it should help.

Transfering video to Mac

Digital video on the ZR400 is transferred to a computer only via the DV out port, which will connect to a firewire port on a PC or a Mac. USB will not transfer video, only images to and from the card.

Sony DSR-11 Will Not Recognize Timecode

I think you may have misconfigured something because the problem is not in your DSR-11 try connecting it to a monitor and you will see the time stamp and picture as proof of what I am saying. The problem I think is that your Mac is not processing the time stamp correctly. Sony DSR-45 Lost Firewire Signal

Port's fried for sure -- that's a classic Firewire Port Burnout problem. Could be a cheap repair if you can take it to someone who's not afraid to get their hands dirty (soldering, perhaps). I don't know how integrated the port is to the unit (like on a laptop) so good luck!
