I sent a private message that included more than one person and I now want to delete this message because I don't want some of the other people included in the private conversation to have the information I sent. I forgot how many people I had sent this message to and when I got a reply, I forgot that other people in the conversation would see it too when I had only intended for the person who sent the reply to see what I had written.
I've been through something like that and researched it thoroughly. I'm afraid you won't like the answer. Unlike facebook posts, which you are free to delete and it will no longer be available, facebook messages are more like email, in the sense that all you can delete is the copy you can see. If the message has already been "delivered", you can not remove or delete the copy (or copies) at the receiver end. Best you can do is follow up with an explanation or apology, or do whatever damage control you can come up with. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

There is a way of recovering deleted facebook messages.
In order to recover a facebook conversation:
You must receive email notifications from facebook, telling you when someone sent you a message. Ex. Paul Wilson sent you a message on facebook
Click on that link.. If you have already deleted the notification, go to your deleted messages inbox (hotmail)..
(It's impossible to completely remove something from a computer!)
At the bottom of the message, you will see a link, click on the link that says :
To reply to this message, follow the link below :
ex. http://www.facebook.com/inbox.php?lh=0e5633de8d92e7fab7145ffc710260dc&
then click on : SHOW DELETED THREAD.
Done!
SOURCE: FaceBook Messages are sent to my Gmail address,
The fact that the email address is noreply@facebookmail.com means you cannot reply to that using your Gmail account.
The only way you can reply to that message is by logging in to your Facebook account and go to messages. Please refer to the image below:

I don't think they can be retrieved. I'm pretty sure once you delete a message on Facebook, it's gone for good since there's no trash can.

YOu cannot delete facebook messages. You can only archive them. If you go to "see all messages" you will land on the page where all your messages are. There you will see an "x" on the right side of the messages. Click on them.
Facebook users can post what's going on in their lives in a very public way on other users' pages. If you don't want everyone to read your musings, you can send a private message to a friend's Facebook in-box. This feature is a convenience that can be safer than sharing your own personal email address or personal information online. Like any email client, you can keep Facebook email after you've read it, or choose to delete it from your account. But with Facebook, the email is irretrievable after you delete it. Other
