I had nearly the same problem. My black tinytunes locked up from static electricity. Even after resetting, it would would freeze up whenever I tried accesing any menu item.
The fix can be found on the Brookstone installation CD. It's a blue, 3-inch disc with "Brookstone" on it. Put it in your computer's CD ROM and it should autoinstall the SigmaTel Audio Player. You may get prompted during installation that some files on your computer are newer than those on the disc. Choose to keep the newer files if this happens.
After the install, connect your TinyTunes to the computer. If you can, copy any files from the player on to your PC as they will be erased in the next step.
Now look for the SigmaTel MSCN Audio Player folder in your program files. Click on "Firmware Download" within. A window will pop up showing the firmware versions. Tick the "Format Data Area" box, then select "Yes" when prompted. Now hit "Start" at the bottom of the box.
At this point, a couple of blue progress bars will run for about fifteen seconds as the firmware loads. When it's finished, hit "close".
You're TinyTunes is as good as new !
Peace.
