download the file
click on run
activate the product by putting the product key
if you are not able to find the product key
log into norton account and see for product details

1. Click the Start menu button, click "All Programs" in the pop-up menu and select "Norton Internet Security" to run the program.
2. Click the "Activate Now" button that appears at the bottom of the Norton
Internet Security's program window, or click "Renew Now" if you're
using pre-installed software. Click "Next" in the Norton Account window,
and enter your full name, address, phone number and email address.
Click "Next" to proceed with the activation.
3. Type in the Norton product key located on the software's product case or
select your payment method, and enter your 16-digit credit card or
debit card number. Enter your expiration date, and enter the security
code located on the back of your credit or debit card.
4. Click "Next" and wait for the Norton Internet Security program to
connect to the Symantec server. The program will send your billing and
payment information to the Symantec server, and activate your program.
Make sure that your product is activated.Once your product is registered(activated),you can uninstall it any time and reinstall the same.You can uninstall it through "Add or remove programs" in control panel or by running Norton removal tool.Norton removal tool does not remove your product subscription information.
I think may be its due to the you are trying to active Norton 360 or Nav with the product key of nis or trying to activate with expierd product key
1.you need to remove existing Norton program with Norton removal tool 2. Download and run Nis2010
to download Norton removal tool go to www.norton.com/nrt or www.syamantec.com/auotools Download and run the first tool
Once we finished the un installation we need to download and run Norton Internet Security 2010 to download Norton Internet Security 2010 go to this link www.norton.com/nis10
Seems there is an issue with the software instance installed on your computer. You may have to uninstall the version completely and reinstall and reactivate the product. To do this, try the following steps:
Click Here to download the Norton Removal Tool. Download the file from the website and save it on your desktop. Now run the file (Right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista and Win7 users). After cleanup, the tool would ask you to reboot your machine. This removes the Norton product completely from your computer.
Now goto http://www.symantec.com/norton/index.jsp and download the trial version of your product and install it on the computer. You can also use the disk for installation, if you have one.
On installation, the product would give you the activation screen to register the product. Fill in your activation details appropriately to activate the license.
You should have received the activation code when you purchased the download....if you didn't purchase the download, then go online to www.symantec.com to purchase/activate your program. Print your receipt with the activation code on it...or you should have received an email from Norton (Symantec) with your activation code. If the program you downloaded was a trial version, then you will need to purchase it in order to get your activation code......
