The 178C will boot up, find satallites and even allow me to function between screens, however when not moving between screens it will shut off after about 30 seconds. I can push the on button and it will again boot up. Prior to this the unit functioned without problems for the past 2 - 3 years. Why is it shutting off on me? same issue on mine, last max 4 min before power off. Will power right back on by oushng the power button ony to power back off after a couple minutes. Did anyone resolve this?
I've had a similar situation with a Magellan, it would power off despite being plugged in.
Its usually a battery issue, perhaps its not getting enough power? You could try to unplug it and do a "hard battery reset" depending on the type of battery. Keep turning it on and let it run out, until it wont even turn on anymore, after that plug it into a charger while off and allow it to charge completely. Turn it on, see if it still shuts off.
Good luck!

I just posted yesterday w the exact same problem. I power it up and it powers down after 20-30 secs. If I do this a dozen times or so it will finally stay on. It just started doing this last year ( after 4 yrs). At the end of last year I thought I had resolved this issue by cleaning the contacts. Now its doing it all over agin. At first I thought it might be a thermal prob but if that were the case I don't think it would ever come on and stay on. One of the solutions you got was the battery. I had thought of that too. The battery is 3-4 yrs old and when I go to start my boat ( and I have the 178C on) the low battery warning chime comes on. Looked at Gamin website for any help but the 178C is discontinued. With it being intermittent I'm hesitant about taking it to a repair shop. I don't want to buy a new one especially when this one cost ~$700. Maybe I'll pursue the battery possibility.
