You don't want to compress your drive... it's really not recommended. And you can't de-compress it once compressed.

I will suggest buying a new drive; Harddrives are rather cheap, and cloning utilities will make the transfer of your data eazy peazy.

Compress an entire NTFS volume
warning.png You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

bullet.png Double click on My Computer on the desktop.
bullet.png Right-click the volume you want to compress, and then click Properties.
bullet.png In the General tab, click to select the Compress Volume to save disk space check box, and then click OK.
bullet.png In “Confirm Attribute Changes”, click the option you want.

You may have already attempted this but Maybe not....
This error usually happens in Linux but occasionally within windows.
My apologies if this does not help.

Unable to enable ntfs compression

There are a number of reasons for compression to be disabled, but check these two things:
The cluster size for that volume:
Compression is not supported on cluster sizes greater than 4KB
By default NTFS cluster size for Windows Server 2003 never exceeds 4KB

This one is less suspect, but another registry entry that MUST exist
for 'Disk Cleanup' compression to take place:
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesCompress Old Files

Other thoughts:
The command line "compact" utility can be used to disable compression for a folder and, optionally, it's subs. This might be a suspect if it were invoked at any time on that volume.

PLEASE READ:
Before you invoke compression on a volume it's best to read this "Best Practices" article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251186/EN-US/. Compression can have a detrimental effect on performance if used improperly.
