If the picture is playing fine and you notice that the background is getting more and more red, until it is too red and the set shuts down, it could be that the red screen control is set just a bit too high. If this is the case, you can probably correct this yourself. If you are watching a perfect picture and then it suddenly flashes a very bright red, with thin red lines in the pictureand then shuts down, it usually means that the red picture tube has developed a short in it, between the cathode and heater. A good tech might be able to remove the short by arcing, but if the short persists then the red tube will have to be replaced. Either way, this is something that should only be done by a qualified tech.

Hi Guys
Your problem here has to do with the amount of aging that happens to the three colour tubes - red, green and blue.
Blue actually ages slower than red and green. What actually happens is the green tube deteriorates and due to green being the predominant colour for brightness causes the blue tube`s flyback lines to appear - especially when switching between inputs or when the video is blanked.
No replacing the blue tube will not solve your problem as the tube is actually the best one of the three.
As someone mentioned there is a way to adjust this by removing the speaker grill assembly in front of the set. Doing the service mode adjustment with the remote is not the right way to solve the problem - you would be adjusting the colour gain and off-set values and would seriously be compromising the white balance of the set.
On the left hand side behind the speaker cover you will see a black square block with six adjustment points. Look for the one marked SCR BLUE, Switch the set to a unused input so the blue lines become visible. Now adjust the BLUE point counter clockwise until the lines disappear. A small adjustment should do it, Switch back to a picture and make sure the whites are still white.
This should sort your problem. I would however suggest asking a Sony service centre to do this for you. This is a dangerous thing to do as you will be working close to the 35Kv supply the the anodes of the three tubes.
I hope this answers your question.
Goo luck.

hi, i had the same problem today. i took a risk and opened the front bottom panel(regular star faced screws located at the side) where the speakers and buttons are located. then i unscrewed the panel located right below it. i then unplugged the wires that were connected to the bulbs(sorry i dont know the technical term for it but there should to be blue, red, and green bulbs). when i reconnected i turned it on it was fine. its been about six hours now and it's working perfect. hope this helps.

I just had the same problem. If your lucky it might be a free 5 minute fix. The five light flashes mean impropper current. I took the front grill off, then behind that is another black cover, I took that off and noticed the circuit boards COVERED in dust. I then took an air can duster and blew off all the dust... works like new. No more flashes and in an out picture. The collection of dust was interfereing with the electrical current.
