have you checked if you have downloaded the correct driver....??because in most cases that happens if you have installed a wrong driver....hope if this works
Best possible solution put back your 40GB and try to get an external casing for your 320GB to see if it works.And try windows on NTFS instead of FPTS, so reformat your 320GB and install the Windows XP again.

On the web, go to Toshiba.com and select your country. Look for support or downloads then choose your computer. You should get to a page that has all the latest downloads for your computer. You may want to download them all as they will be the latest, and install them.
