I have a dell 3000 dimension desk top with a cd-r/rw unit that no longer works, doesnt read cd's or open. I also had a dell 4600 tower that I didnt use but had a working dvd rom. I replaced the 3000 drive with the 4600 drive, it reads cd's and can download software, i tried a movie but it doens t read it. Do i need to download any software or drivers in order for it to read a dvd? The 4600 let me watch movies and i believe to burn them also. Any help??

Windows Media Player 9 or later should be able to play DVDs without the need for additional drivers. If Media Player does not play your DVD, you should open up Windows Explorer and delect your DVD drive. You should see two folders (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS) listed. If not, there is either a problem with the DVD media itself or the drive is not properly reading the disc.
I personally use Nero 9 for most of my burning operations. I also use Windows Media Player to burn custom audio CDs from my MP3 library.I personally use Nero 9 for most of my burning operations. I also use Windows Media Player to burn custom audio CDs from my MP3 library.

The 4600 has PowerDVD to play DVDs (You should have the software CD to install it on the 3000) DVD burning software would be Roxio/Sonic, and you should have that CD too.
If you don't have the CDs, then try download.com to download Free player software and Burning software

This unit needs replaced it has seen better days sorry. The only thing you can try is shut off all power to the PC then unplug the PC and that cd drive from the rear of it. let the PC boot all the way up so you see your desk top. Shut it all the way down un plug PC hook back up the wires on the back of the CD player let it boot back up see if this stops it.Remember to rate my solution this is how i earn my achievements also testimonial Thanks much in advance.
Not without adding a SATA drive controller card to the computer. If you can afford it, hang on to the SATA unit, as your next computer will definitely use it, and buy another PATA drive for this computer.
The drive's laser lens is dirty, try to clean it. If that fails to have an effect then the dirt has already been burned on the lens, unfixable, replace the dvd unit.
have u checked with the cmos battery? please replace the battey and check if it it working if it doesnt turn on try to get *********** board repaired or replaced
