I HAVE A HOOVER POWERMAX II WITH SOFT GUARD. WHEN I TURN ON THE POWER, IT SOUNDS LIKE A MOTOR BIKE. WHAT IS WRONG? IT STILL CLEANS, BUT THE NOISE IS UNBEARABLE. WHAT SHOULD I DO TO STOP THE NOISE. I HAVE CELAN THE BRUSH, BUT THAT DOES NOT HELP.
These vacs can stop up in almost inaccessible places. That sound means that it has stopped up somewhere and the electric motor is in a strain. Keep it running like that long enough and the motor is toast. I have one that seems to prefer the hose area where it goes by the motor and into the bag. The tube from the motor to the bag also is prone to stop up. To take these apart requires that you start at the beater bar area and work you way inward. In certain areas if you look closely, you'll see little arrows pointing to the screws. These are the ones that will allow you to get closer to the innards of these. When you get to where the motor is, look for blockages from the attachment hose. It takes only small items to completely block it off which will effect performance from both the beater bar/normal intake and also from use of the hose itself. The b***ards can be a pain to keep functional. I've personally removed rather sizeable wads of dog hair from mine that mucked up the works rather than went into the bag. Belts for the beater bar are notoriously short lived in these as well. When they break, the vacuum is only good as a floor sweeper. Stock up on both belts and bags for these. Good luck!

what does the really loud noise sound like? Is it a loud, whining sound? if so, the motor may be getting ready to go out. Also check that the belt isn't stuck-though you would smell burning rubber if that were the case.
recently had same issue with friends. remove the filter and see the other thin filter there that goes to your motor compartment.. remove that and clean it. also check inside your tubes make sure not partially clogged.
cord reel assembly maybe the spring jumped one time over out over 1 of the confirmationpoints of the reel assembly or the roller on the shaft is worn something is broken on the shaft and or mounting points that it tilts and walks somewhere against, sometime its better to get out the spring of the unit instead of repair because of the costs.
http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=40860&thid=810370 Really loud noise. Posted by Theresa626 on July 20, 2008 The belt inside my Hoover broke and so we replaced it. But when we did, it now makes an extremely loud noise when turned on. We think it’s the roller to the vacuum because it doesn't make a noise when the roller is not in there. The roller sounds like its hitting something. However, we have pushed and pulled and done everything and all seems to be right. Everything is clicked in and the belt is on correctly and we've followed the manual. How can I fix this problem? Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me that it is a bad brushroll and could need new bearings or a complete new brushroll depending on if id is metal word or plastic. Some brushrolls are rebuildable and some are not, you can check your owner’s manual to see if it is or is not; or it could be the start of a broken fan blade or bearing in the motor section. But that is the only thing that I can think of that might be wrong.
