Question about Toshiba 65H82 65" Rear Projection Television

Toshiba 65H82 Projection TV; location of Convergence resistors

I recieved some great advice from a fellow user about changing the resistors and caps on my toshiba television to correct the wavy lines displayed on initial warm up. I am very apt at being able to repair circuit board issues myself and have just succesfully changed the convergence circuits on this TV. However, I am looking for clarification for the location and appearance of the resistors and caps on the circuit board so that I know that I am changing the right ones. Also, do I need to bleed the high voltage power from the capacitors for this job, and if so how? Thank you very much.

The caps will bleed off within a few minutes of being unplugged. I don't know which caps and resistors he was telling you about but here goes.
Typically along with the convergence IC's the output resistors under the heat sink are at least checked with a multimeter. They are large resistors and should match their color code markings. The caps are probably the caps in the hyper module (hyper board)
Here is a very good tutorial to do this repair or get it done: http://www.dshosu.com/how-to-fix-toshiba-rear-projection-hdtv-wavy-lines/

Slight convergence problem after changing convergence circuits

My experience has been that the resistors have fallen out of range. These aren't expensive and neither are the caps that surround this area. If you're pulling the board out to change the resistors, might as well change the caps, too. If you're strapped for cash, but have a multi-meter, you can test the caps and the resistors after they've been taken out of circuit to save a little green. Let me know if you need any help testing them; I'd be glad to help.

Location of convergence chips for TV with missing tag

Instead of winging the repair why don't you get a complete repair kit + instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com ?

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

TV set after fluid change. Notice how bright the colors are now. Everthing looks crisp and sharp again.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Wavy picture

this is caused by a bad convergence module, and there are probably some dried out electrolytic caps in the circuit as well. i have one in the shop right now that came in with the same problem. if you have it serviced, make sure they replace all of the convergence modules (there are usually 2, but sometimes 3 of them), because if one went bad the other(s) is likely to go out soon as well.
