Motor making grinding noise and burning smell

FH40010B model number. I in the last 5 months bought a hoover hard floor cleaner. I truly love this machine as I had one for years previously. This new one only used 4 times so far began making a grinding noise and a burning smell when I turn it on. I immediately turned it off cleaned everything out and tried it again and it is still doing it. What can I do to get this fixed or replaced as it has only been used a few times...desperate for answers...Thanks, Denise

SOURCE: My Hoover will not turn on

there was probably a leak in the hose/piping near the pump in the vacuum that shorted out the motor. you will need a new motor for the vacuum. you will also need a new pump assembly. i strongly recommend that you also replace all the internal tubing and places where the pipes join.

SOURCE: burned smell

If the motor slowed down this would indicate a bad motor. not cost effective on this model to replace unless under warranty. it is not uncommon these days to see a motor go bad every now and then.

What are the first 4 digits of your serial number? this would be the month and year of mfr. even without a receipt, a warranty service shop should be able to assist you.

Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner with MaxExtract Technology making...

The cleaner does it's job well. Using on standard short carpet.
The problem so far is after 6-8 uses it started making a grinding noise when pulling backward.
Brushes still spinning just had the noise and the unit still functioned properly.
I only use it about every 3-4 months to clean 3 rooms.
The last use the noise got worse as it was making in forward and reverse motions.
The noise would usually start after using it for 5-10 minutes.
I figured it might be a slipping belt on the beaters and probably water was getting on the belt making it worse.
I removed the circular beater assy by just pulling it out.
Removed the round front beater by removing 3 screws, 2 at each end and one holding the belt guard on towards the middle. Once the beater is loose slide it out through the belt.
The front beater cogs for the belt had some black build up in between several cogs.
I cleaned the cogs very thoroughly, checked the belt for wear and checked the motor gear. They looked ok.
Assembled in reverse, did a quick dry test but didn't fill all the fluids to do a full test. That will have to wait till next time.
Please don't hold me accountable if you try this and break something, the cleaner is made mostly of plastic and the pieces can easily break. Don't try unless you are willing to take the risk, it may void warranty if it gets broken.
If problem still persists then will try using the 6 year warranty that it supposedly has... From what i've read it might be a pain getting it fixed under warranty.

I love my floor mate which I bought last year. Now it is making a funny sound and has a weird burning smell. I was told to take it to a repair shop but before spending the money I want to find out if this...

It may be the belt. Sometime the motor spins but the belt is not spinning with it. This causes the belt to heat-up and burn/melt. The burned rubber maybe what you're smelling and sometime make funny noise and hard to push the vacuum.

How to fix clog on hoover floormate fh40010?

I was having the same issue with my NEW just out of box Hoover FH40010. First run on the floor was great then the water/cleaner stopped dispensing!!! I found that when is assembled it out of the box I did not have the handle "plugged-in" properly!! I reattached it to where there is NO gap in the handle when pushed firmly into place and locked in the base. WATER SOLUTION NOW WORKS PERFECTLY!!!

My Model 2961 Eureka wont take power now?

Hi,

Anytime that you smell that electrical burning smell on a vacuum cleaner, this is the motor going bad. There are two distinctive burning smells in fixing vacuum cleaners, the electrical burning smell which is the motor, and a rubber burning smell which is the belt.

The bagless vacuums cleaners in general, their motors last usually no more then 3-5 years. The motor in bagless vacuums work much harder then the motors in their bagged counterparts.

The motors in Eureka vacuums can range in price from $70-$120. If you can provide me with the exact model number on your vacuum cleaner (can be found on the bottom or the back of the machine on the sticker that also contains the serial number) I will be able to get you the part number, and price of the motor that's used in your vacuum.

It may be worth considering to just get a new vacuum cleaner at this point. If you'd like me to give you a personalized recommendation specifically for your unique cleaning needs, I'd be honored to do so. Please just let me know what types of floors you have mostly in the home and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of vacuum cleaners.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you found this helpful, please be sure to rate the repair helpful so other Fixya users that have this same problem can easily find the answer.

Thanks so much,

Chris J.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me like you have multiple problems with your power drive; a burning smell and the brushes don’t turn, and the dop is on March, 2008 – the Hoover Steam Vac Shampooer has a one year factory warranty and it could be a broken part for the brushes won’t turn or a belt would cause the burning smell. If it is not the belt or broken part it probably is the motor of which you should take it to a authorized Hoover vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the Hoover factory cust serv listed below or the Hoover website for information. If it is the motor the factory authorized dealer will replace the part for the motor and the broken part for the brushes, if it is the belt that would be an out of pocket expense. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
