Model: Whirlpool wtw6600sw2
When I enter diagnostic mode, I get the F51 code (RPS). When I run through the manual checks, the sensor seems fine. The wash, rinse and spin indicators blink on and off as I spin the tub by hand. All the motor functions work. All the pump functions work.
When I run the auto diagnostic, it runs fine from c1 to c6. Then it starts draining the basket while turning back and forth trying to detect the basket engagement. This is a C7 function, but the display reads C6 still. It drains, the basket engages but it continues turning back and forth with the C6 diagnostic indicated. After about 7-8 minutes of this it stops and displays an F72 code (basket re-engagement failure).
I opened it up and checked the wire harness from the control panel to the RPS. I used contact cleaner on both ends of this harness. But, the behavior is the same.
I'm guessing it's the RPS, but it doesn't seem to follow the diagnostics the way I would expect.
Any ideas would be apprciated.
Basket Re-engagement Failure.
F then 72 flashes when the basket check routine fails to determine if the basket is re-engaged after being disengaged.
Is the basket floating? If yes, pump out water. See Long Drain.
Does basket turn freely? If not, determine cause of friction.

SOURCE: F51 & F72 Codes
The F51 error code indicates that the control is not sensing proper motor movement through the signals from the RPS (rotor position sensor) circuit. This can be caused by several different problems. Make sure that you are not overloading the washer. Overloading can cause this problem. A toy or foreign object could be under the washer that is interfering with motor rotation. With the washer empty, spin the basket inside the washer tub to see if it spins relatively easily. If not, you could an item caught between the spin basket and the tub. You could have a wire harness problem causing signals to not be transmitted properly between the RPS and the machine control board. A failed RPS sensor or a failed control board could also cause this problem.
