Defrost cycle may be faulty. They are usually simple timers with contacts that change the reversing valve. check to see if the RV is switching

SOURCE: the unit outside is getting ice around the line close to where you put refrigerant in. House not as cool as needed.

Freon is low. Sounds counter-intuitive, but the large return line should be cool( even have condensation on it) but never cold enough to freeze.Either use factory pressure settings or add just enough Freon until Ice melts. If unit has a high-side sight glass there should be no bubbles present. Do not overfill.

My Grand Aire heat pump is forming ice all around the outside fan unit... Is this normal?

No that is not normal. Your AC unit may be low on refrigerant coolant and needs to be recharged. If it's low, there's probably a leak, which is causing the ices on the outside unit. Contact a qualified service technician to check & service the unit.

Hello,KY the defrost function is not working. The wire goes to frost sensor or the outside unit control. It is LOW voltage wire.Turn the unit off and carefully look for a abandond/bare wire.Maybe a single wire with a wire nut/cap or splice.Reconnect the wire as there should be no EXTRA wires. The unit will make a strange noise when restarted.Good luck.

Carrier 38CKC042300. oUTSIDE UNIT FAN WAS TURNING REAL SLOW. ac UNIT IS OFF BUT FAN TO OUTSIDE UNIT IS STILL TURNING. sHOULD NOT BE TURNING AT ALL WITH AC UNIT OFF

The outside fan may run if the unit is in defrost mode this is normal for most heat pumps it is there way of trying to keep the outside unit from staying iced over so the next time the unit runs it will have air flow through the coil and the ice will not be there to prevent air flow.

Our janitrol heat pump is freezing. there is considerable buildup of ice inside the pump itself on the coil. the fan still spins and still heats the interior of the home

Switch the thermostat from heat to Aux. or emergency heat till the outside unit thaws out. This will shorten the life of the outside unit considerable running it all iced up.

I have a 20 year old Trane heat pump. Outside

Yes, you will want to put the unit into cooling mode to help assistance with the ice melt.

If you can, block off the outdoor coil or disconnect the outdoor fan motor. This will assist in raising the discharge pressure and temperature and thus, it will melt the ice quicker.

Or, if you have the capability, you can take a garden hose around to the unit hooked into hot water and melt the ice that way.

If your control board is messed up, why aren't you replacing it?

Heat Pump Not Performing up to par...

This sounds like a small freon leak. If you have a low pressure cut out switch, it should cut the compressor off before it gets too low. If you have a lot of ice on the outside coil, then maybe the defrost board or the sensor has went bad. But because you said it is running continuously, I think its low on freon. Unless you own a set of gauges for this equipment, call a pro.

HEAT UNTILL THE LOAD HAS BEEN REACHED AND THE HEAT PUMP CAN CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN IT.
