My computer sounds like a power generator

Is this a laptop or a desktop PC? The two common parts of a computer that make noise are the cooling fan(s) and the hard drive(s). Is the noise caused by air moving, like a hair dryer? or does it sound mechanical like a grinding noise?

The fan in modem makes loud noises at times

Modems don't have fans.
I think you mean your fan in the computer makes a loud noise. Some computers have settings where the fan speeds up if you are doing a lot of things--making the computer work harder.
Some fans make noise just before they fail. Depends on the type of noise. If it's a sound that has a lot of rattling in it or maybe a high screeching sound, I'm thinking you'll be needing a new fan. Probably a CPU fan is the culprit. Also, fans on video cards often go bad--so you'll have to open the case and listen to where the sound comes from.
