Question about Olympus Camedia C-740 Ultra Zoom Digital Camera

FORMATTED DISK For some reason, when I turned my camera on tonight, it was on the screen that asks whether or not you want to format the card. I SAID NO! But then it said BUSY .. I panicked and turned it off, thinking that would stop it. Later, I turned it back on and now 340+ precious pics of my grandson at various stages are gone. I feel sick. Why did this happen and is there any way to recover these? I didn't notice it right away and have taken 4 other pictures (thats why I had the camera with me)!

    my son was playing with the camera and when i took it away from him, it was in the formatting program saying busy with a count down and now all my pictures are gone, including his 5 year old birthday..i am heartbroken, can i get them back?

Yes, and you should try photo recovery software, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.

Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the camera memory card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Yes, any SD card will work. I can't find any documentation as to whether an SDHC card will work. These are high capacity cards but SD cards will work for sure up to 2GB. Check your manual to be sure to insert it properly. You will have to format the card in the camera before use. Just insert the card, turn the camera on, go into the menu and find "format" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Only stores to internal memory not memory card
1. Go into the camera menu and find "reset"...follow the on-screen instructions. 2. With no card in the camera, format the internal memory.
3.Don't wait for a message...format the card in the camera (never in the computer).

Remove the card...turn on the camera and go into the menu...find "reset"...follow the on-screen instructions. Then try to format the card again.

When power is turned on the card setup screen pops up. The only 2 options are to power off or format. If I select format, the pictures will be erased if yes is selected.
Memory card seems imbalanced due to some reason and can only be corrected by formatting as advised in camera pop up.
Of course all picture files will be deleted if card is formatted. Try to put card in card reader and back up files in computer.

The camera freezes and won't even close
This sounds like a defect. Since this a relatively new camera, Nikon will likely fix it under warranty.

However, let me ask whether you have changed memory cards since buying this camera. This camera is a little finicky about what cards you use. Try using a different card -- especially one that you have used successfully before.

Another suggestion: After you have downloaded all pictures to your computer, use the camera menu to format the card. Sometimes a corruption in the card can cause the problem you describe.

When i turn the camera on....it saids memory card requires formatting. then continues to say formatting will delete everything on memory card. i press continue and nothing happens. goes back to say memory...
Use a computer with memory card reader, and read the card using a computer.

If the computer says the same and does not read the card, then the pictures inside the card are usually lost.

If computer instead does read the card, then transfer all picture on computer using the memory card reader, and format the card using complete formatting.

If you need to use the camera tonight, then buy a spare memory card.
If the camera returns same error on different card, then you may have a faulty memory card slot, but that is quite uncommon.

Memory card not initialized
You just need to reformat the card, which you can do through the camera.  I sometimes get this problem with my memory card when I take it out of my card reader without properly ejecting it first.  The camera will say something along the lines of "Card Not Initialized".  So, turn on your camera, hit "menu", then go to "option" (and subset "set up") , then "format" and go to the right and then click on OK and if I remember correctly, it will ask whether you really want to reformat, which you do.  Caution though---you will lose any pictures on your card by doing this.  But it should solve your problem!  Good luck!

Memory card locked!??
The card locked usually means 'protected' Check out the manual for image protection - on/off. Or put card back into computer and delete[NOT FORMAT] from there. A more comprehensive manual is usually found the the CD that came with the camera

Can't take pictures
The focus element within your lens may not be moving normally. This can be due to contamination such as sand, impact, or failure of the motor itself. If the lens cannot resolve proper focus the auto focus system on the chip will not continue to take the picture. Another possible reason is that the button has simply failed. Is this a material/design flaw? Will Canon fix the problem to correct what amounts to a defect. Camera has not been dropped or damaged.
