There are no bleed valves on hayward pumps. there are freeze plugs. one is at the front of the pump at the bottom and there is another located on the side where impeller is at bottom

SOURCE: using a hayward vari-flo valve model SP 710x32

Do not drain a vinyl liner pool mor than half way....ever... If you have a fiberglass, or gunite pool it is important to pull the hydrostatic plug under the main drain cover. If you live down a hill, or where there is a high water table, the water pressure underground can lift the empty pool out of the ground (more common in fiberglass pools). If you have a sand or DE filter switch the valve to waste. make sure that you have the skimmer turned off, and the pump is only sucking from the pool main drain (spa drain closed also), and turn the pump on. Make sure the waste hose is far enough away so you dont add any hydrostatic pressure.

SOURCE: The pump only hums when plugged in. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the impellor is locked. Take this part off and then see if the pump is turning but before you do, some of them have a big screw driver slot in the shaft. If it does, turn it to see if you can free the impellor. I have done this many times and they will continue to work for years after. They just get stuck from rust, etc. and also being frozen a little. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: air in filter on hayward above ground pool.

This is common the first 30-60 seconds after turning the filter on. The filter is purging its self of the air, sometimes algae or small debris will shoot back into the pool as well.

If it is constantly getting air then replace your o-ring on the that clear cover (Strainer Cover) make sure you use a lubricant, and like djtc66 said re-wrap all threaded areas with teflon tape.

SOURCE: how do i drain pool with hayward valve? setting is

you do need to set the filter valve to waste but you need to make sure the valve on the suction side of the pump is pulling water from the pool instead of the spa. Also, if you have a separate skimmer and main drain valve on the pool suction, make sure the skimmer valve is turned off. Otherwise, you will keep losing suction. If you don't have a separate skimmer and main drain valve, you may not be able to drain the pool with your equipment.

try running the heater with the filter removed or on bypass . preasure (water line)switches are often the guilty party. and in some casses you may need to bleed the gas line to get fresh gas to the unit, you can use soapy water to check, that the fitting leak free, after bleeding at the block

When my filter is in the filter position i am losing a little bit of water coming out of the waste and backwash pipe

The gasket or o-rings on your backwash valve are leaking. Bring any part of your valve to a pool store and they will know the parts you need.

Are vacuuming the pool . My sand filter does not work right it has no pressure going out to the pool. a pool store said it might be air bound .bleed the air out same thing

Do you have problems priming the system? If so you may have a suction leak in the plumbing attached to the front of the pump or a bad 0-ring seal in a valve. Symptom would be that when you set up to vac. The pump would lose prime or move very little water. Also maybe a clogged pump impeller.
