My remote controls the TV,
but not the DVD (it's the DVD remote that came with DMR-ES35V). The
settings on p 19 of the manual do not work because it requires pressing
the "function" button...but none of the buttons on the remote work
except for the top right corner which controls the TV...all of those
work just fine.
I think the remote needs to be reset, but is
there another way to reset it besides using the buttons on the remote?
Some switch somewhere? A "reset the remote" code? A magnet? Hammer?

I figured out, unlike all the other posts, you don't have an enter button. But Instead, you would hit the 2 and OK button at the same time for a few seconds. I had the RC1 message and I did the 1 with OK and it worked. so if you have RC2, you should hit the 2 and OK. Should work!!

My remote is not working. When I press a button, I get the following message on my unit: U12, U30, SET #, CHK REMOTE #, or RC #. What can I do to fix this? The message displayed means that the remote control and unit are not communicating and the remote needs to be programmed. To program the remote, press and hold the same number that is displaying on the unit and the [ENTER] or [OK] button for more than 2 seconds. For example, if the unit displays “SET 2”, press and hold [2] and [ENTER] or [OK] for more than 2 seconds.

Is the Remote Control sensor in direct fluorescent lamp light or other strong
sources of light?
Press unit POWER button down over 7 seconds. The POWER indicator goes
out. If the Power was On, the screen will also disappear. After 5 seconds, turn
Power On and operate unit normally. If the steps above do not restore normal
operation, disconnect then reconnect the AC plug and turn the power On.
If that does not work, Panasonic offers free tech support 6 days a week 1-800-211-7262 (pana).

From User guide:
U61 • There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the unit was on. The unit is carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not broken. Wait until the message disappears.
If fail unplug and hold power button for a minute or two and turn it on and repeat.
