Yamaha RX-V659 power up problem

Hi, I have RX-V659 receiver. The set has a standby/start up problem. I first thought it was the 2 pin mains supply plug and changed it. However, the problem persisted. I noted that if i removed the mains plug for a few minutes (+- 3min) and reconnected it the system would immediately power up. The system would then work perfectly. It would run the whole day without a problem. Over a period of time the situation has worsened. The time to leave the set disconnected has increased from 3 min to 45 min. Further, if I switched the set on and off immediately the set would power up with no problems. However, if I switched the set off for a few minutes it would not power up. I would have to disconnect it from the mains and leave it disconnected for 45 min before reconnecting it and trying to power it up. Clearly a component is loosing tolerance and causing the set to malfunction. Thanks Tony

SOURCE: Yamaha RX-V2500 completely shut down

Sounds like the volume control on zone 2 is your culpret. You should set up zone 2 to have a "fixed" output instead of "variable" it's in zone 2/3 setup. whats happening is you are overloading the volume control from the zone volume on the receiver and getting feedback to the receiver and shorting it out. What you do is put zone 2 to fixed output. set the vol control to 3/4 then adjust the vol to relatively loud and exit out of settings. this will be your max volume setting. Now, on to your problem.Unplug the receiver. There is an internal fuse that could have blown, not to likely but it's possible. You have to take the top off the receiver with a #1 phillips or a T10 torx they vary. It's about 7 screws, pop off the top and look from front to back, you will see 1 or 2 fuses near the AC plug port. Sometimes they are gray or white and you cannot visibly tell if it's bad. If you have a multimeter, set it tone resistance. Then put your leads on either side of the fuse, if you hear tone the fuse is ok. If not check your leads by touching them together and you will hear tone then test again. If you don't have tone, your fuse is bad. Radio Shack should stock the fuse you need. If you don't already know this, there are 2 Power switches for your unit. Front of receiver bottom left corner "Master Power" and normal Power switch "Main Power" check them both. If your fuses are good and power is good, you have bad transistors internally and it needs to go to service. check www.yamahausa.com support and service, and you can find the closest authorized service center to send it to. If you mail it out directly to the service center rather than taking it to a dealer, you will save some money and get it back faster. Lastly, pull your zone 2 volume control and look for black marks on it or white chalky substance. "oxidation". If you don't mind spending a little money on the system, hardwire the speakers thru and replace the volume control with an IR receiver. If you could control the zone from the zone by pointing the remote at the volume control you had an IR vol control. You really didn't need the vol part. Xantech or Proficient make good IR receivers that aren't too expensive and will keep this from happening again. If you need any more help, I am a Yamaha Dealer, let me know where your located and I can send you to a good service center. Just post a comment and I'll get you the info you need. Hope this helps

SOURCE: Compatibility issue: Sony BDPS350 Blue-ray & Yamaha RX-V1700?

HDMI compatibility issues continue to plague the industry and this more than likely is the problem. There are a couple of ways around this. Some people insist on "hot rodding" the dvd and tv by hooking up directly to each other avoiding the receiver all togeether (I do this). But you lose functionality and it makes things more complicated for other family members. Your best bet is to use RGB and Digital audio cables. You won't notice any quality loss and there is a possibility it will look better.

SOURCE: connect Airport Express to Yamaha RX- V659

Since you're using a standard mini jack to double RCA cable, it's safe to assume you'll be sending line level signal into your reciever, so i think any of these audio inputs will do: AUX, CD, DVD, MD, TV.

Also try the inputs on the front of the unit (i guess they are meant to be used with a video camera or similar but they are designed for line level signals so it should be ok if you decide to use them).

Anyway, keep the source signal at a moderate
level when you test any of the inputs and raise it to a suitable level after you're sure it is coming thru well.

Normally, the AUX input is suitable for any AUXilliary signal source that puts out a line level signal, but if it is already being used, you may use other free inputs.

If you use TAPE or PHONO inputs, you should keep the signal level from the source a bit lower since these inputs will amplify the signal a bit more (especially the phono input which works with signals that are lower in level than the line signal).

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: Yamaha Receiver (rxv3000) has intermitent power problem

Most, but not all of the voltage regulators are cooled by the same heat sink
that the output transistors are attached to and get overheated when you crank up the volume. Although this unit has a cooling fan, after some time the heat sink gets HOT and will age these parts. There are also a group of three current limit/ voltage drop resistors supplying one regulator that will give up too. This is not for most DIY folks. Repairs are available in certain parts of the country. I know of one you can ship the unit to and get it fixed like I did.

How to troubleshoot remote controll

Most Yamaha receivers have a remote ID so if you have more than one Yamaha you can control one without bothering the other, do you still have your owners manual? If not have you tried the people at Yamaha they are very helpful with a problem like this but for an example I have my Remote ID set at ID1 because I do have 2 Yamaha receivers the RX-V1300 and the RX-A3020, see if you can find the section in your manual that talks about remote IDs and let me know if that fixes the problem and you can always goto http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/ but that is the site for the United States they do have sites for many countries at http://www.yamaha.com/

Not used for several weeks, now will not power up, no response, dead! Any ideas where to start? Merry Christmas to all

Hello
There only two reasons for this power fault to this set. Cehck them. If these two are altight, the set need service.
[1] The protection circutary has been activated:
Make sure that all the speaker wire connections on this unit and on all speakers are secure and that the wire for each connection does not touch anything other than its respective connection.
[2] This unit ahs been exposed to a strong external electric shock (such as lightning or strong static electricity): Set this unit to standby mode, disconnect the power cable, plug it back in after 60 seconds and then try to use it normally.
If these does not help you, get this set repaired by the Authorised Service Center for Yamaha at your town. OK.

I tried hooking up an old polk sub to my yamaha rx-v659 av receiver. smelled wires burning smell. before i could unplug it, receiver shut down. now it will power up for about 5 seconds and shut off. manual...

If a fuse was blown, it likely would have no power. However if the power board has overheated, the capacitors may have swelled up and burnt out and will only allow it to power on for a few seconds, then shut down. The capacitors can look swelled up or burnt or have burn marks on the power circuit board. You can test them with a continuity meter. Each component has a printed number of it's voltage and ohm resistance so you can test them.

Need yamaha codes to program into uverse tv ir remote

(I have the RX-V659). Because the Yamaha remote has TWO SEPARATE buttons - power ON and power OFF (standby). This problem can't be fixed. There's a code to choose power ON and another code for power OFF. But one button can't be two buttons. Bad engineering\ design by Yamaha in my opinion
