Hi unfortunatly at the moment I'm unable to afford a new dvd recorder, so I purchased a used machine from a shop, the problem is they couldn't supply a user manual or any form of instructions, can you please tell me where I can get the information on how to use my machine, at the moment it looks very prety but that's as far as it goes, I will be very grateful if yo can help, I live in the north of England, just thought that might help with where I get them from. Many thanks Paul Garside.
Hope you can help!

That's because the DVD+R and DVD-R discs are actually different, and the recorder is made to record only on the +R media. It will play back discs recorded by other units on -R discs. But you'll need to purchase the +R type. They are the same price.

Hi Thanks to all. Problem was solved by my son who suggested that I turn the unit off in standby mode. Samsung DVD-SH855 will not record via timer settings when the unit is left with pwr on. Only works if pwr switched off.
Had I known this prior to purchasing I would have purchased a brand that worked with pwr on.
Sorry, when they die they are dead (it's too expensive to work on them) ... welcome to the disposable society. On the other hand a replacement can be had for a few $ on www.ebay.com or www.craigslist.com.
hi all, spanky new, ok here my problem!! i got the panasonicdmr-e55 for xmas, 3 or 4 years ago. since then and even wheni started to use it the disc i recorded on were -R phillips 4x. since then i have tried every available manufacture of 4x's u could think of and yet to this day it will only record on a phillips 4x disc. its been in the shop a few times for cleaning and upgrades and yet they haven't beable to tell why it only accepts PHILLIPS BRAND 4X. the new upgrade i recieved fromthe manufacture was supposed allow higher in x's on disc. it accepted 16x phillips only ONE TIME AND REJECTED 50 OF THEM, SINCE THEN ABSOLUTELY NO MORE 16X OF ANY KIND. OK SO THIS MORNING I TRIED TDK, MEMOREX, H.P. CIRCUIT CITY, AND 6 OTHER BRANDS ALL 4X NEGATIVE R, STILL A NO GO HELP, THANKS GINA
Try unplugging the unit from its power supply. Wait a few moments and then plug it back in. I have the same unit and that is what I have had to do. I am afraid that we have purchased junk. This machine "works" some of the time. It usually functions well as a player but fails on numerous occasions as a recorder.
