The printer will not scan. I press start once, nothing happens. I press start again it says busy. Eventually a message shows saying printer and computer not connected. It may say to re-install something. I unplugged the cords and that did not help. It used to work. The ports seem loose inside the tower.

I honestly don't know how I solved it; I did everything your forum suggests at least two times (restarting, disconnecting, re-installing, etc), but nothing would work. After I got up the next morning (four hours sleep!), I did it all again, and this time it worked. I did two things differently that may have worked. Somewhere in the owners manual, it says to wait for quite a long time (like over 5 minutes--I don't have the manual with me now). Also, it says to NOT turn the printer on until AFTER installing the software. Those two little items may have made the difference, but the main idea of reinstalling came from you. Thanks!
When the scan button is pressed on the product, nothing happens. The scan button does not work correctly.
Choose one of the following options to scan without using the scan button.
Option one: Scan using Windows Fax and Scan
Click the Windows icon ( ), click Programs , and then click Windows Fax and Scan .
The Windows Fax and Scan option is available in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista. If you have the Home Basic or Home Premium edition of Windows Vista, skip to Option two: Scan using Paint .
Click New scan .
Click File , and then click Scan .
Option two: Scan using Paint
Click the Windows icon ( ), click Programs , and then click Accessories .
Click Paint .
Click File , and then click From Scanner or Camera .
Click Scan .
The drivers in the Windows Vista operating system do not support button press functionality on the product.
To Scan on Brother DCP 1000 you need to click on the "Paperport" Icon on the desktop. Then Click on "Twain." Lay your document to be scanned face down on the scanner glass. Press the "Scan To" button on the Brother DCP 1000 printer. On the "Twain" window click on "Start." Note: When I clicked on "Start" it initially scanned blanks. I clicked on "PreScan" and saw an image. Then I again clicked on "Scan" and it worked. I named each document I scanned and saved them in a folder for later use.
HP gear is troublesome all right. Sounds like the drivers and software necessary to catch the button push on the scanner is not installed or working correctly (this is separate usually from the other drivers and so forth). Try reinstalling all of the HP drivers and utilities from the latest versions on their web site.
Switch the unit. let it rest for half an hour. While it is resting check the manual for any 'faults' list.
Look for a 'reset' command - may be mean pressing several buttons while the machine is off and then with the buttons still pressed switch on the machine[you may need two hands and a nose or three hands for this ;-)]
If still out of luck go to places for further info
