I have an RCA model 1285 mini stereo. It has bad FM reception. It only has a wire coming out the back for FM reception. How can I add an antenna ?? Most antennas require two contacts!

Actually most use the AC Ground as the other "phantom half" of your antenna... Of course YOU will not get access to that circuit because errors there could cost your life.

You COULD try stripping back some of the insulation and extending that single wire to a longer wire?

Wire placement will be a factor too so try moving that longer (and stock wire) around for BEST reception.

Here is a link with some insight:
How to Get Better Reception for My Single Wire FM Antenna Techwalla com

I tried to find a "service manual" and schematic to help more, but I could find none... these items are mostly throwaway now because the cost of labor and STOCKING specific parts is too expensive!

FM antenna is not providing reception, despite cable connected to powered antenna amplifier. TV also connected to powered antenna amplifier (splitter) works fine. FM mode produces only static. I purchased...

If I understand your setup, you've connected the receiver antenna terminal to the output of the antenna amplifier. If this is true, I'd suggest trying the receiver using a plain old FM dipole antenna (available at Radio Shack and other stores) or even just a piece of wire hooked to the antenna terminal. You should be able to pick up some local FM stations then.

What might be happening is that the FM is being filtered out by the amplifier. Some amps made mainly as a TV signal booster have an FM trap designed to block the FM broadcast band. In the analog broadcast days, the FM band was right near the sound part of a TV signal, and the trap was there to prevent interference. It may be filtering out your FM band.It may also be possible that you're just overloading the FM antenna input with the amplified signal. Sometimes a signal can be too strong. Using a simple wire antenna will let you test the receiver by itself.

Other than connecting an antenna you shouldn't have to do any setup for FM reception. If you still get no stations at all when using a simple antenna, then the receiver may need service. But I doubt Circuit City would have sold a floor model that was defective, even at the very end, unless it was clearly marked as such and sold "as-is". I'm pretty sure you'll find that the receiver works with an antenna made for FM.

Am fm reception bad

FM reception is weak

What to do

• Extend the power cord as much as possible. The FM antenna is in the power cord.

• Move the power cord to adjust the FM antenna

• If you still have problems with FM reception, you may need an external antenna.

* Call Bose®Customer Service to request one.

The external antenna on your radio is a coax (round) design It needs an adaptor and an antenna which are cheap.

Easy to make, radio shack "F" connector 90 degrees or straight, to 300 ohm wire connections. Attatch a 300 ohm flat ribbon antenna cable to those two screws and plug into radio and see how your reception is. You will need to position the antenna wires to get best reception. I have hid them in back of paintings and so on.

Cheapest solution next to putting an extension cord on radio power cord.

Wont play radio whats wrong

Hook a piece of wire to the FM antenna input. You should get a strong station. Turn off FM mute. If you still can't get a station you will need reciever serviced.

I can recieve on my CB but cannot transmit

sounds like thats a regular antenna wire. cb radio normally have a pl259 plug. and you need a propper cb antenna not one that has am/fm plug. cb antennas require tuning using a SWR meter.

Fm Radio signal?

There was a black wire included (with a metal "cap" to insert in the FM center connector) that served as the FM antenna, but in a pinch any wire can do, preferably about 33" long and with the insulation stripped from the last inch or so (or get creative and sand the last inch of varnish off a properly sized untwisted clothes hanger and gently bend to suit). Bare stranded wire should be twisted or folded until it's thick enough to firmly fit the middle "hole" of the FM antenna connector. Be careful that no strands of wire short to the metal ground "ring" surrounding the hole or the antenna won't work (although it won't burn out your amp like shorting the speaker wires would, it just won't work). Orient the wire horizontally or vertically for best reception. This unit also doesn't pick up FM very well if you're in a steel-framed building or away from windows in the general direction of the local transmitters, so moving the unit closer to a window may help dramatically. In bad reception areas you can get an external FM "rabbit ears" type antenna but you'll need the "European" style of 300 ohm to 75 ohm transformer to plug it into the unit's FM connector (one that has a bigger central connector "plug" than the usual US units). Some cable systems also still support FM, if yours does, a VHF/UHF/FM signal splitter and either the above mentioned transformer attached to flat 300 ohm cable or a plain  "European" style connector attached to the end of the 75 ohm round black cable will do the trick. Some Radio Shacks have them. Good luck!

BMW 528i AM Radio Reception Problem

An external antenna will make an improvement over the embedded one. The longer, the better.
You can re-use the original speakers & wiring for an after market setup. You should obtain a Haynes service manual for your car, as it has the wiring diagram for the factory radio, including color codes of the wiring. You will need this info to re-use the factory speakers & wiring.
