Carlos does 2014
if the s.m.a.r.t software shows this,
then it's 5eal....
1:fan dead.or lint packed, vents blocked.
2:or hdd is about to die. some everheat at near end of life.
Seagate white papers cover all that...
3: buy and SSD drive and end this and run way faster. (amazing for sure)

way 4,
if the GPU /CPU thermal compounds fail
as all do this old(most compaq, are no in the landfill, stuck with MS XP, ***** OS)

then these 2 processors, dump huge heat loads to the case insides
causing what, hotter HDD.
can demo it. too.

One of the most, noticeable reasons, of a video card heat, or any onboard device, its dust, or not compatible devices, or overpower device, ...some laptops un the ventilations have to be flush with air, to clean the fan, or some hard disk, has poor ventilation area. to reduce heating , clean the dust or don't put your laptop over a bed, or pillow, or carpets, just put over a flat place.

To my knowledge there are no heaters or heating elements in hard drives, on the contrary there should be a heat sink with a cooling fan

Hard drive wont work heats up

If you are running apps of high system requirements the HDD might heat up. Try to check the fan if there's anything blocking it, better clean it if ever and make sure to backup all files as soon as now for possible hard drive failure.

I'm trying to extract files from a HDS728040PLAT20 clicking and wont read

When a hard drive encounters this problem, it can sometimes be solved temporarily by changing the heat. Because all metals expand and contract in heat changes, this can sometimes get it unstuck.
You can try putting it in the freezer for 1-2 minutes and then plugging it in, or heating up a material, such as a hot/cold pack a little and then warming the drive up.

Heats up and stalls

this could be for several reasons.
1. internal cooling fan fault
2. the hard disk is having issues
3. not enought ventilation.

swap another hard disk to see if its the hard diak that has the issue.

Laptop does not detect recognize maxtor hard drive

Remove and re-attach the data (flat ribbon) cable to the hard drive. Heating and cooling cause poor conections to ecome no connections. By removing and re-attaching the data cable, you remake the connections. You may want to do the same with the power cable connections. If this does not work, my experience leads me to think the hard drive main board is dead. If this is the case, the drive will not be recognised. If the drive itself is dead but the mainboard is good, the drive is recognised but will not read/write. Heat is a real nasty hard drive killer.

This is normal. SATA II drives spin much faster and run much hotter then IDE drives. You can attach a hard drive cooler to the hard drive if you wish and if there is enough room in your case.

Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz and internal 250Gb hard drives

I have always found that the seagate drives are much more reliable than all the other brands. I suggest that you go for a Seagate. As for the overheating my lappy overheats even with a 160GB HDD. Over heating is not dependent on the size of the drive and is caused usually by dust clogging the heat sink. Good maintainance such as cleaning up the dust once in a while is all it takes for a notebook to run cool.

My Laptop Dell Inspiron

Check the disc for scratches, this could be a bad disc. However, I'm leaning towards another issue besides the hard drive being bad. Tell me what initially happened to make you buy a new hard drive. Hard drives aren't effected by the heat produced by the machine, so tell me what made you think it was heat that caused the hard drive failure.
