Question about HP Compaq Presario CQ50-110US Laptop
First what I did was notice that I power up the and got a black screen. pulled it apart and got the same issue. used my LCD TV as monitor. ran the start up diagnostic on the DVD Windows 7. the screen came back. But now I am get a hot Hard drive. and now will not boot from hard drive. I am thinking all along the it was the hard drive causing the problem, am I right?

Yes you a are right. or both,
fix hdd first.
i cant tell because i cant watch you do all that.
the order and timing of those tests and events right?
ever run SMART< see what the drive temp is., it tells you.
85-90f is normal.
why not just boot the PC to linux stick first or CD/DVD
see if screen works, end the drama?
the fix that or the bad drive,
is the fan dead, that it, the 2.5" drive never get hot.
unless outdoors in the sun and the fan fails, and like I said cant see you or where you are. there.
IS hot only warm? warm is normal for all HDD, mead.
and 15,000 rpm super hot is normal. in fast DT.
your s is 5400 rpm drive my guess.
the PC is old right, and like most Old PC and dogs
lots of issues, never seen on old and not lots bad.
ever. and virus infected.

I am pretty sure you have a corrupted operating system here, or have somehow gotten corrupted video drivers. Boot to safe mode and change the video drivers to Microsoft VGA Generic and reboot and see if that fixes it, If it does, you can experiment with installing updated drivers for that machine available on the HP web site.
Also run a disk check on all drives; sounds like you might have some data loss.
If this does not fix it, consider reinstalling the operating system and then patching it to the highest level possible.
If reinstalling the OS does not work, you might have hardware problems with the screen or motherboard, though this is pretty rare, and is a different matter to troubleshoot.

SOURCE: hard drive controller
These can be fun and Hdd/IDE/SATA Controllers on Desktops are different than laptops.. Embedded controller chips as well as the Northbridge/Southbridge chips are integrated to everything else and its a nightmare to track down period. (Ive had to replace Integrated Modem chips to cure a Boot or BSOD error that states the Video Adapter needs to be changed) ..(Generally due to Power surge or other).. You are on the right track however and I'd just suggest running Memtest of the Knoppix to start be4 I can say other. Is there Shared or dedicated RAM for the GPU on this one? They manned both ways depending on the specific board revision..

Do the following without the battery inserted.
Let the computer sit with no battery for 24 hours. Do not put the battery in at all. Try using your original memory stick ONLY, with no hard drive and see if it will POST. If it does, insert the hard drive and try again. Could be the new memory...
Another thing you can try is reseating the processor. Turn the ZIF screw, take the processor out (WATCH THE PINS!!) and put back in GENTLY. Leave the memory in the computer, hard drive removed, try to power on.
These models have been known for bad motherboards. Contact HP and arrange to send it in. If you do enough digging on HPs website, you'll find the service advisory.

As I have mentioned in the past these problems are usually connected with improper partioning with the hard drive. My suggestion would be to use FDISK to check for partitions that are marked as not being used.
Be Careful when using Fdisk because it can and will sometimes backfire.
(you can find Fdisk on just about any startup disk
Just make sure that there are startup files on the disk

Can you see what's on the screen if you hold it under a light? Did the screen die suddenly or were there more symptoms?
