When I start unit up it says maps are locked and it no long displays detail maps. If I search for an address it say no detail maps to display. Spoke with basic Garmin Support two times and both said the problem was way over their heads. They transferred me to PC support and the wait time was 30 minutes or more. Ridiculous. Can't sit on the phone that long. Hopefully someone can help me here. Also, I've entered all unlock codes and I went to mygarmin.com and repeated to be sure they were current. Did not help.
I had the problem with a Garmin 2730 and what I did was hook up the usb to the unit, turn it on and when offered, selected the USB storage option. When the drive came on line called GARMIN, I went into the garmin folder, deleted gmapprom.img, deleted gmapsupp.img. I launched the mapsource DVD, highlighted all the USA maps including Canada and clicked on transfer to unit. When transfered, I went back into the GARMIN folder and renamed gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img and no more locked codes. If you have the DVD that came with the unit, make sure a file called gmapprom.unl is there. It can be opened by NOTEPAD, and should have the unlocking code for the current DVD that you used to transfer the maps with.
You need an unlock code (25 Char Code) to unlock the map details...
I held on the phone with Garmin for about 2 hours, but they fixed my unit, PATIENCE!
