When i tried to open a file on my machine a message was displayed that the machine did not know what program to openthis file with. i had the choice to choose from a list the program i would like to open...

The quickest way is to save that same file type to the desktop, right click on the file and click "Open with" and when the program box comes up, choose the appropriate program and tick the box to always open with that program and it'll change the program the file opens with.
