Question about Zenith P42W34P 42 in. EDTV-Ready Plasma Television
Black Vertical Line (2-3" wide) runs top to bottom. I saw an earlier suggestion to check filter cap. And the offer to send that person PDF of the Service Manual. Might I get that PDF?
Black vertical lines on your P42W34? Apply pressure between the silver metal board and the orange ribbon cable on the bottom portion of the TV where the black lines occur. See pic below.
If this helped you, please donate the money you would have paid for the repair to your favorite charity :-)

The plasma display screen is made of a matrix of elements connected to cables along the side and top. On your unit, some of these many, tiny connections are making contact intermittantly thus losing the elements in that area. These contacts are held in place with just pressure and if that is disturbed, you lose that line of elements. Try squeezing the cabinet of the TV on the outside at the top in the area of the loss and see if that makes a difference. May have to go inside and see if the contact assembly is disturbed or warped or something.

Just wanted to let everybody know that my plasma has the same problem but mine works fine for a minute and then it has the black line.. I took mine apart as suggested above.
I took regular wrtting paper used as a shim to make the contact
tighter, so far is working just fine.. I do not know if the paper is safe but I'm allways watching mine screen.
