Hp 640 cant send or receive fax(NO ANSWER FROM REMOTE FAX

Might be silly question but is it setup to auto transmit and receive? And have you tried to operate it manually? + take out the inline filter fax machines operate on volume'db' to soft and it can't hear, to loud and it can distort sound.

DSL is DIGITAL. All fax machines are ANALOG. It won't work reliably.

Unfortunately wer purchased two new hp office jet 7610 which do not come with cabling and we could not get the fax to work. I spent 3 days on the telephone with hp and British Telecom each of which blamed it on each other. After doing some research on the internet I discovered that hp require a strange cable formant which is called a 'cross-over cable' is required. I bought them from cabling4less.co.uk and the product code is BT-203X. hi, just try to reset the memory the of fax. i think that's the cause that's you cant send and recieved fax..i hope it would help you...

You cannot use a four wire cable to connect the fax to the wall. You must use a two wire cable, like the one that came with the machine.  BTW, that means you can't you the EXT port to connect a two line phone or answering machine.

It sounds like you're not set for AUTO RECEIVE. Try unplugging power cord and re-plug in

I have the same problem. I can send a fax, but if I try to receive a fax, the distinctive ring goes off, and it says RECEIVE on the display, but it doesn't receive anything, and there is nothing in the memory. Any ideas? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Recieving faxes

• Plug a regular, non-digital, phone into the fax's phone line and see if you get a dial tone
  • If you do not have a dial tone, seek support from your telephone service provider
• Dial the fax number from a phone    
  • Normal circumstance is that you will have the fax machine pick up and make high-pitched noises
  • If the fax does not pick up, put a regular phone on the fax line and see if the regular phone rings when dialed
    • If the phone rings, answer it and see if there is line noise
      • If the line is clear, call the service number listed on your fax
      • If the line is staticy or unclear, call your telephone service provider
    • If the phone does not ring, call your telephone service provider

Sending faxes

• Attempt to dial the fax number you are trying to send to from another phone.
  • If you hear electronic noises on the line, the other end has a fax machine on the other end
    • Check to see if you can recieve faxes.
  • If the remote fax does not answer, the problem is on the remote side, contact the recipient
