It could be an abs sensor, cruise controller, or a number of other things. If you're interesting in trouble shooting the issue yourself, I would be happy to further assist you if you can get the check engine light code and post it for me.
Some auto parts places will check your code for free.

If everything else works ok, the vehicle drives normally, and all the other gauges are working then you may have a bad speedometer servo motor. This servo is what actually moves the speedometer needle to match the speed you are driving at. The cluster would need to come out and be repaired to fix this problem if this is the case.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.
