Horizontal line in the middle of the television

I have a Magnavox 27 inch television set with just a horizontal line in the middle when turned on. The sound and even the channel changer works. I would like to know if this is a costly repair, or is there something that I could do to fix this?

I have a 27MT3305/17 27inch Magnavox TV. Had it for 2 years. for the last 4 weeks I have been watching a black horizontal line at the top of my TV screen grow wider and wider. I is now around 4 -5 inches wide vertically.

From your description of the problem, there seems to be a Cold solder in the Vertical Oscillator or Deflection Coil circuits.
If you know Solid State electronics, and are good with a soldering Iron, sure u can do this yourself.
U gotta trace the Vertical section components and locate the cold solder. In most cases it will be a loose connector from the Deflection coil to the main PCB.Also check for the soldering of the Vertical output IC.

I checked out with my friend's tv the exact Location of the problem:
On the CRT circuit board(picture tube), you will find R3340, which is a
10 ohm 1/3w resistor. The location of the resistor is printed on the
bottom of the ckt board. It is burned open, replace with a 10 ohm 1/2w
resistor. This will solve your problem. The original resistor was sized
too small, should have been a 1/2 watt.

    This resistor is mounted
standing up on ends. Mount the replacement resistor the same way. You
can probably get the resistor at your local Radio Shack. You will
probably have to buy a package of 5, but what the hey . . . they are
    cheap.

Be careful and don't get the circuit trace too hot and damage it

Tnewk, Your symptom is no vertical deflection = check for
B+ voltage present at vertical output IC.If present = replace IC.
If missing, check B+ power supply............T.

Note: 10 ohm resistor replacement symptom = No video,
lit white screen with retrace lines ...........T.

SOURCE: Horizontal line in the middle of the television

Hello RENE1223,

Normally this is not a costly repair. This is because it could be the vertical coupling capacitor. However if it is the yoke transformer it could get costly. There is no way for you to repair this problem if you do not have a background in electronics. So I would suggest taking the TV to a repair shop to get an estimate. If the estimate is within the range you are willing to spend let them fix it.

I hope this helps,
thank you,

My tv will turn on but with white light line then shut off itself

If the line is horizontal (it is a vertical problem) If its a Vertical line (it a horizontal problem) So it could be just a bad solder joint or a component has failed in the horizontal or vertical section. Hope this is helpful.

RCA 27 in has white horizontal line going through the middle

this symptons is caused by a breakdown in the vertical deflection circuit. hence, the trouble may be in the vertical oscillator, amplifier or output circuit. in most modern tv the vertical ic is usually composed of these said circuit inside. the ic have many pins, standing on a heat sink and smaller in size. try to check also the capacitors surrounding it. sometimes leaky capacitor may cause this problem. good luck!

It sounds like a vertical deflection problem. You mentioned you had a white HORIZONTAL LINE in the middle of the screen. If this line runs from left to right across the screen it's in Verticla deflection. If it runs from top to bottom, it's in Horizontal deflection. I am assuming the problem is a Vertical deflaecion problem. The repairs necessary are most likley to replace the vertical capacitors or the verticla deflection chip.
Good Luck

Black screen, high pitched squeal

A set that has only a 1/2 inch bright line through the middle of the picture, from left to right, has a vertical output IC that is not working correctly. If the 1/2 inch line is in the middle but going up and down, then the horizontal yoke circuit has stopped working. These are problems which should be looked at by a qualified tech, but if the set was purchased 6 months ago then it should still be under the manufacturer's warranty.
