Dvd freezes half way through movies and cannot be fast forwarded or stopped

What might be happening is a misread of the disk or a buffer error, these happen often, and can be fixed sometimes by cleaning the lens, cleaning and relubricating the guide rails and making sure the rubber bumper gromets are not worn down. Now these are all of the mechanical things you can do. The problem could also be a bad memory sector in the play back buffer, or a store and hold voltage could be off a bit (indication of a bad capacitor). I hope this helps.
SOURCE: DVD video player problem
More than 75% of the time, the erratic behavior of dvd playing is caused by defective dvd disc.
The other 25% of time is the dvd player's inability to track the disc properly. Most DVD players on the market today uses 3-beam pickup tracking method. Sometimes the optical eye (tracking device) goes bad and start giving above discribed symtoms. There is a dvd player cleaning disc you can buy on the market (radio shack) too. It has little gentle bristles on the disc to rub off the dust on the surface of the optical eye of the dvd player.

You may have a problem with the transport of the dvd laser. Open the compartment that you place the dvd into. You will see the spindle, the laser lens and the transport device that moves it during operation. The transport system operates on system of gears and drive rails. You must check and clean the drive rails and gears. Use a can of compressed air and blow all the dust and debris from the dvd compartment. Then use some cotton swabs with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the tips and clean all the rails and gears. Check the transport action by moving the transport to its most outer position and back to its most inner position. The action and travel of the transport on the rails should be smooth and easy. The gears should be clean and move easy also. These parts will require cleaning every month or so . Remember do not touch the laser lens with your hand. You should also check the lens it should look bright and shine. If not try cleaning it with a cotton swab and a small amount of alcohol. Rub the lens gently back and forth unit it is bright and shines. Now you can try playing a dvd and see if the player works properly. If this does not fix you problem. You can reset the dvd player to the factory settings.1.Press the setup button on the remote control.2.Use the left and right arrows to highlight the preferences page.3.Press enter to to enter the preferences sub-menu.4.Use the up and down arrows to find the default function and press enter. SOURCE: I have the LG BD390.
I had the exact same problem with my BD390 and another LG home theater system, both with the current firmware updates. I noticed others have posted this issue on various sites as well. I called LG and the guy I spoke with seems to have been coached pretty well on the scenes where this problem is occuring since he could sight the exact scenes that were giving me the problem. He claimed the blu ray probably isn't exactly 1080i or 1080p and that the player is probably having problems processing the resolution so I should lower it to 720p. This didn't fix the problem and didn't help explain why my blu ray player which plays plenty of other high resolution movies only has a problem with this movie. I think a firmware update is needed to fix the issue but I'm not holding my breath that LG will be proactive in getting that out soon.
Testimonial: "I think your right about the LG person. And maybe they will do a firmware update. So far this is the only movie. DVD of Iron Man II was fine. "
