Computer boots and I see the screen for a few seconds before it fades out and is gone completely. I can hook up to another monitor and see things fine and I can use the F8 to toggle here, there, both, which seems to work, except of course for the black screen on my laptop. I booted with the computer plugged in and not simply on battery power and got a screen that did not "go black" until I pull the plug to work off battery power. Sounds like a power problem? Or a screen problem? or what ever, how do I fix it?
I think you have to UPDRAGE UR BIOS and check power suply ram and hdd!!!
Hi, First, are you sure you have the correct power supply? Also, the lcd inverter could be going bad, consequently needing more power than it can get off the battery. Hope this helps, Good luck
Hi, Yes changing the inverter isn't too tough. You can find the service manual here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy... I really wish I could have a look at this machine; it's just not that old, and tho the widescreen laptops seem to have inverter problems more than the older lcds, it just doesn't feel right. To bad you're not in Oklahoma, I'd take a peek at it for you. Good luck. Let me know how it works out.

Okay, it is the right power supply. Sounds like a power problem to you, too, then? I thought it could be a power issue when I watched it fade away. And a laptop that has to be plugged in kind of defeats the portability thing. Is the lcd inverter something I can replace? Given that I have never opened a laptop before...
Thanks for the suggestions. I am having a bit of a problem with it being anything more than the screen since I bought the big guy extra large battery and it lasts forever and ever. Here is a thought. Recenty, like a day before this began, I did a presentation using someone else's projector. I still feel like I am toggling through the F8, but could that be a factor in any way that changes your thoughts?
I just lost my display on the year old 710m laptop but still have the external video capabilities. I cycled thru F8's but no help. Unplugged large battery, rebooted, still no screen.
Is it likely the display failed?
