Hello,
It appears your model Dell 2400 should have been supplied with the CD's for reinstalling Windows XP, CD will be green or blue in color and the drivers and applications that came with the computer.
If so, back up your files first to an external drive and then put the CD in the CD drive and reboot the computer. It should come up to reinstall XP.
If good to go, you will be prompted to install the second Cd as well as online XP updates.
Software that was installed after you bought the computer also wouyld have to be reinstall as well as restoring your backed up file.
Rememberm all data is lost when you reinstall your operating system, unless these is a choice on install that may ask for destructive, or non-destrutive (keeps files).
I am attaching a link to Dell for your to copy and paste into your web browser for the support page for drivers and user guide in the event you need to reveiw the process.

1. About a year ago, due to a virus.
2. I tried both long and short versions.
3. Yes, I believe it was on drive C. where I believe the movies were
This is what I don't understand, although I don't have the movies (which were taken from my digital camera) I still have the original still pictures. Is there a way I can convert the still pictures to movie mode??
What are ALL the file extension's for searching for a movie?
thanks for your help!
How long ago were they deleted?
Did you try both the long and short versions of the File Scavenger scan?
Did you install File Scavenger on the same drive the movies used to be on?
