Audio codec Yeah my camera won't play any sound. How do I know what audio codec my digital camera uses so I can download it on my computer?

The audio is probably still there, but your computer is missing the proper audio-codec to be able to play it. You can download the free 'MediaInfo' tool to analyse the media-file to see the specific audio-codec details and download the correct audio-codec.

Or, perhaps simpler, try a few - free - mediaplayers with built-in codecs, like MPC HomeCinema (http://mpc-hc.org/) and VLC (http://www.videolan.org) and play the file with one of those ...

You have not mention what Operating System (OS) you are using on you Computer. If you are on Windows OS, most probably you have not installed the required AV "codec" to to be able to play the audio formats from your video files. Different recorded videos from different manufacturers video recorders use a varities of AV(Audio/video) formats due to copyrights protocols.

For Windows OS, you can download & install the latest codecs ie. "K-Lite Codec Pack" or "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack" which will play most of the AV formats.

In addition to the above if you wish, you also install a free versatile media player like VLC player too.

It could be that you need a video player on your computer that supports the audio codec used by Sony.
I suggest that you download and install VLC on your computer and use that to play your videos instead:

the camera itself does not have a speaker, but it records audio and you can hear it on the computer.

I bet there is sound on the video but your using the wroung codec when playing it in windows or the mic is bad on the camera witch is unlikely.

you need to install quicktime www.apple.com
I have a kodak C60 and had the same issue and I was like duh this is in MOV format so I need quicktime so I downloaded that and bingo!!

See I bet you using microsoft media player (with no .MOV codec) Thus the audio does not play. Like i said give it a try let me know ether way.

There is a chance that you don't have the correct or updated audio and video codecs installed.
Codecs are required for playing the latest video and audio files.

Go here and download and install XP Codec Pack. Restart your computer and try playing one of your video's.

I have the same problem with playing videos from my Samsung Digimax S600 on Windows Vista. The audio plays fine on the camera, but not in Windows Media Player. The only solution I've found is to play the videos in Quicktime...then the sound works just fine. Hope this helps.

go to download center
open source
download the xvid codec...

Find out wich audio codec the camera uses to record audio and install it on your computer.

This camera does not record sound.
