Question about GE XL1800 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Went to turn on the light and heard a pop from the keyboard. Lights went out and the turntable is not working. Tested fuses and their good. Clock works, everything else seems to work. Any help in what could possibly be wrong would be most appreciated. Thank you

Did you recently have a lightining storm? Or a power surge or outgage? The control module could be defective.

Good luck

SOURCE: went pop 20 seconds into cooking clock still works

Remove the cover and look for a blown fuse. If found, replace the high voltage diode and the 'stirrer' (a fan like device that is inside the sheet metal wave guide near the area where the microwave energy enters the cooking cavity).

SOURCE: microwave does not heat things when turned on.

My Samsung has a Demonstration mode for use in the showroom which doesn't allow it to heat. Might want to check that before replacing the magnatron. It's such a hassle to get them unmounted and taken to a repair place!

No Light and the turntable is not working

Open your microwave completely unscrewed but make sure it is disconnected from the power; check all the other fuses inside, if it doesn't fix the issue then take it to a pro to get this fix.

if microwave is counting down but no heat you either have a loose connection at the magnatron tube or the thermal cut out fuse that is connected to the magnatron has blown or you have a micro switch, that has failed

There is a varistor or thermostat switch mounted on the wall behind the control panel. I unpluged the leads and shorted them together. the fan and lights started working again. I got another microwave off freecycle.org for parts. I noticed a lot of sites tend to point to the control panel for a $36 to $100 board repair. Don't fall for it. H.G.

Heard a "POP" and both lights went out. Replaced bulbs and still, No Lights".

You most likely have a blown fuse. The fuse is located inside the case at the top and likely to the left.

Microwave oven does not heat anything. Clock, turntable, lights work. I turned the turntable off while the oven was cooking--heard a noise, now it doesn't heat anything.

I'm guessing that nothing is working...is that right? If so, first guess is the breaker or an internal fuse. Nearly all units have them. You don't say what fuse you checked. Unplug the unit, remove the bulb and see what is in the socket. Next, open the breaker and then turn it back on. This will reset it. Something caused this.
