What does U81 mean

It could mean there is a fault on one of the circuit boards. See

Dmr-ex85 shows u81 code and is not functioning at all, says please wait but eventually just goes onto error code. no buttons will function?

Physically unplug power from the unit for a minute or two.
Connect power cord to unit and Simultaneously Press & Hold
both the [STOP] and Channel UP [^] for 5 seconds. This will
force Eject the DVD tray. Remove any disc if present.
Cycle the power again if necessary and wait for the unit to
go through its self check cycle. If after several attempts, and
you continue to get this error, then your Ram drive may need
to be replaced.

U81 error up Do I have to take it to a electrical repairer or is there anything i can do ?

I posted a suggestion a couple of months ago about a similar Panasonic DVD recorder (model DMR-EX78EB) with this exact problem:

This is one of several error codes generated by the main microprocessor IC which are tripped by corruption, preventing proper operation and which may require the processor to be reset (where practical) or replaced.

The U81 and U80 codes don't mean anything in particular because the corruption error(s) could be caused by a number of different reasons. It does not point to any specific one fault. This is where the confusion sets in as to the origin of the 'error codes' in any device.

U81 means (in technical terms) 'microprocessor communication malfunction' on the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter' or 'microprocessor feedback information error'.

This is not something the user should undertake to repair themselves; it should really go to an authorised Panasonic repair centre. The cost depends on the parts used and the labour, however, it is not unfixable. You can always get a quote on this and a second opinion, then decide for yourself if it is economical or not.

The DMR-EX series of models are prone to U81 - which is a common (and extremely irritating) error code. As I said, it is not unfixable, if you are prepared to spend a fair amount of money on the repairs by a qualified service technician in a fully equipped workshop with access to all the required components and service manuals.

Certainly worth investigating at least; and you should not need to purchase a new unit. Go with the quote first - then decide on a further course of action.

My dmr-e50 ca not play any disc it display dvd drive eror

What is the error code being displayed? is it U81 U61 or U99? U61 is likely to be a DVD drive error. U99 is an electrical problem, while U81 is a microprocessor feedback information error. Your best option is to submit this recorder to a qualified service technician in an authorised Panasonic workshop, for a quote, and a second opinion on the likely repair costs and/or parts involved. (it helps to be more specific when posting questions here about DVD drive faults so we can advise people properly on the best course of action to solve the problem (however a few consumers do not know what device error codes are and what they mean; this is understandable in many cases).

The cost to fix this unit depends where you go and whom you deal with. It is up to you, but be warned; if the unit needs a new DVD drive, this could prove expensive.

Error code U81 onDMR-EX75EB Unit will not power up, keeps shutting down

I have posted advice on the possible cause behind this error code (as well as other members on FixYa) for this model DVD recorder previously. For you I will re-iterate:

The U81 error code is a common problem
with many Panasonic DVD recorders of the DMR-EX series.

This is one of several error codes generated by the main microprocessor IC in the unit which are tripped by corruption, preventing proper operation and which may require the processor to be reset (where practical) or replaced.

U81 means (in technical terms) 'microprocessor communication malfunction' on the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter' or 'microprocessor feedback information error'.

This is not something the user should undertake to repair themselves; it should really go to an authorised Panasonic repair centre. The cost depends on the parts used (if available) and the labour, however, it is not unfixable. You can always get a quote on this and a second opinion, then decide for yourself if it is economical or not.

(sometimes unplugging the unit from the power point for up to 30 minutes, then reconnecting resets it completely and clears the error code with no further remedial action required)

Usually when this error occurs, and persists, the unit cannot be reset by the user. In your case, the constant shutdown may also likely be a fault in the switchmode power supply as well as a problem with the microprocessor. It may or may not prove an expensive exercise.

Certainly worth investigating at least.
It's up to you as to what you decide to do from here.
I hope I have shed some light on the subject for you and similar people who have experienced this particular error display.

My DVD RECORDER MODEL NO DMR-EX75EB, THE CODE U81 KEEPS COMING UP WHEN I SWITCH ON MY RECORDER, ALSO I CANNOT GET INTO MY SETTINGS TO SEE IF I CAN FIX IT. THANK YOU

This seems to be a common fault with many Panasonic DVD recorders of the DMR-EX series.

I posted this 'advice' for this (and a couple of similar models) previously. The DMR-EX series of models are prone to U81 - which is a common (and extremely irritating) error code. As I said, it is not unfixable, if you are prepared to spend a fair amount of money on the repairs by a qualified service technician in a fully equipped workshop with access to all the required components and service manuals.

Because of the malfunction, the user settings and options are inaccessible, and there is no official user-reset option on this or any model of the series to clear this particular error.

Certainly worth investigating at least, as Panasonic usually make great products.
It's up to you as to what you decide to do from here.

After connecting a new TV samsung 37C6000, my trhee year old panasonic dmr-ex85 shows the U81 error and doesnt tune the tdt channels nor works properly. What can I do?

Check that C1801 is not leaky. If so, check if IC1801 has blown. If it has blown, it will also need to be replaced.

Usually it's only C1801 leaky, replace it and thats it.

You can find the capacitor on the main board, under the digital board that has ribbon cables going to the dvd drive.

Hope this helps.
