The unit worked fine, when the battery ran down I placed it on the charger for an entire day but when I replaced the battery the vacuum would not turn on. My chargers blue light continually blinks whether the battery is in it or not (I never paid much attention, so not sure if that is normal or not). I have no way to test the battery and I don't want to spend the $$ purchasing a replacement if it is the charger or the unit itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

check out the switch that activates it. go to thehooverstore for a complete listing of hoover machines. I'm sure you'll find your machine listed along with an exploded diagram of the machine

The tank sits on what is called the reservior asm. it is actuated by the control rod inside the handle. With the tank off, watch and see if you can see that rod hitting the reservior asm when you squeeze the trigger. If it is moving up and down on it, then the resorvior asm may be bad. Also check the valve at the bottom of the tank, manually push it in and see if it releases water.
SOURCE: replace on/off switch on hoover vacuum
My wife picked one up on the side of the road that someone had tossed. The power switch would not turn off. I took the two bolts out of the top part of the handle, and then removed the screws along the back. This will remove the required panels to access the On/Off switch. Once I found the actual on/off button, I found it to be frozen in the "ON" position. After manipulating it for a few minutes, I got the switch to work. This machine now operates great, and I now have a Hoover :)

The aforementioned solutions probably never even attempted this fix on this model. The handle does NOT need to come off. but the 5 screws on the front housing DO: 2 above the light and 3 below it. Then to get the colored housing off you need to access 2 screws on the underside that are beneath the agitator roller. To do that, obviously the 4 screws holding the bottom plate need to come off too. Here's a link to a schematic that might help as you attempt to do this, (assuming that you still do!) http://www.elkypro.com/hoops2005/vacuum_parts/hoover/U5461-900.html
Once you have the main body housing cover off, then you can access the 2 screws atop of each trunnion cover that holds the motor assembly cover halves together. If you've made it this far, then gently pry apart the motor halves keeping even as yo do. Now you can see all the wiring necessary to cut and splice. Happy cord replacing! As for me, I am headed for the store, as I am not so sure I can remember how to get the darn thing put back together. But it was fun taking it apart!
