Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Missing springs on deck pullies need diagram of deck for springs

I have replaced the belts twice and because there is a missing spring or two on the pullies they bind up when engaged and burn up the belt at the pto pully. I can not locate my service manual that came with the mower. Thank you for any help on this matter. Robert Matott

    we replaced the belts but in the manual it does not show where the springs go to the 46 inch huskee lawn mower

Go to www.managemyhome.com and download the owners manual.
After that I would go to www.searspartsdirect.com and look at the pictures of your mower deck (again you need the model #). Once you figure out what you  need then all you have to do is order then from sears.

Possible causes, accumulated dirt/debris above deck or on trans axle, damage,stretched,wrong size belt, belt tensioner seized/missing spring if equipped, belt retainers/guides/keepers damaged /missing/ adjusted to far from pulley, damaged/worn pulleys, loose engine, belt way out of alignment,etc.

Go to your local cub dealer with the modle number of the deck. They have diagrams that will show how to connect the spring correctly. If the spring came off it may have lost tension or part of the hooks on the end of the spring broke off. I would get a new spring. I have also seen the the idler pully get sloppy and not keep the idler pully properly lined up with the other pulleys.The belt will then ride up off the pulley and the spring will come off.

Why will blades will not disengage?
check your return spring on the deck. it goes from hole in bracket welded to deck to hole in moving lever that one of the deck pulleys is attached to. if spring is missing or broke, it will not dissengage or may dissengage slowly. If spring is there, the moving lever may have debris under it or may be bent. If spring is there, remove deck and try pushing the pully with the spring to see if it breaks free.

Mower blade will not disengage, and the cable is intact. What else should I check?
missing return spring (on mine, its on top of the deck forward) or sticking mechanism. With mower off, you should be able to push back on the idler pully and the deck belt should loosen up. If its sticking, pull the deck off and see whats causing it (may be stick or dried grass). If its missing spring, dont try any old spring from hardware store (hmmm could this be from experience???), but order one from ebay or amazon or whoever has it cheapest.

Mowing deck pullies, mounting and spring application.
Download the product manual from the Sears website. Murray manufactured these tractors so you can download the manual from the Murray website also. Procedure for replacing the mower deck belt is quite simple. No need to remove the deck. Spring location also on diagrams. Mower deck parts diagram breaks down the whole assembly. Easier way to remove pulleys is using an impact wrench, otherwise hold the blade while removig the nut that holds the pulley in place. Use a heavy glove to hold the blade for safety!

I have aTroy Built Super Bronco MD 60TG in the operators Man page 44 part #26 Spring Ext .94Dia, 6.74 fell off can not find where to reinstall can you send a diagram or tell me. Pat
The spring is connect to a stud on the front side of the deck in front of the right pully as you look at the mower. The rear of the spring is connected to an brace at the back of the deck behind the same pully. This spring assit in keeping the V-Belt tight when the blades are engaged. Fault stud broke needed replacement.

Look at the Idler pully on the deck ther should be a Spring that keeps tension on the belt if it does not have that feature on that deck then there is a stay pin missing or the belt has just gotten to big (streached)

Craftsman 18.5 riding mower when I engage the blades to cut the blades turn But they do not engage NO Power.Blades Turn But Not enough to cutthe grass.
Hi Jeff, If you look at the deck, one or more of those pulleys is a tensioner, It pushes against the belt to tighten it, The rest of the pulleys can be identified by the fact that they only have a bolt through the middle, whereas the tensioner is mounted on an adjustable arm with a slot to allow adjustment. It should also be the only one that the belt doesn't go around the pully it just pushes on one side.If the tensioner arm is all the way to the end of the slot, the belt is streched and will need replaced but sounds like it may have come loose. Some of these decks also have a spring on the tensioner arm and those come off from a stick or other debris. Check it out and if you have a problem let me know and I will try to come up with a diagram. If your mower is that new there should be a belt diagram on the deck. i will need a model number of the deck or mower for that. Good luck!
