Get sound but no vision
Some details are needed - what type of connection from laptop? VGA 15pin or composite video for example. What kind of TV - I assume some modern flat panel. Did you use the function key on the laptop to send the video signal to the external port. Audio gets supplied to the audio port all the time so that is why you have audio, but the video signal is normally directed to the LCD screen. The function key (F5 or F7 typically) changes this and blanks the LCD and send the signal to the external ports. Press again and you get both LCD and external ports together. This is absolutely the most common problem with people hooking a laptop up to an AV system or device.

VGA 15pin and AWA 106cmPDP TV. I tried what you mentioned on 2 different laptops it didn't work. The TV is connected to a topbox. would this make any diffence?
The correct question is, what do you have your laptop connected to? You can't go thru the Topbox, you need to go straight into the TV's 15 pin port or HDMI port depending on the laptop. The Topbox is a cable convertor to supply signal to the TV - it usually has no means of accepting local input signals. I'd need details on it to be sure. Another thought, make sure you are selecting the correct input on the TV. It should be on PC or whatever they use to describe the VGA input.
going from laptop to tv with 15pin port and selected VGA on tv
OK, VGA and audio direct from LT to TV, and on the right input. How long is the VGA cable? What type of LT? Mac or PC? Are you using any type of adaptor between LT and VGA cable? Could be a bad cable. Check the pins at both ends and make sure none are bent or appear short, as though pushed in. Also make sure that each connection is seated properly and locked in by the set screws. The simplest things sometimes defeat us. REcheck the function key settings that you are actually switching. The best way is if you have an external monitor to hook up to, although that is almost the same as your TV, but there are a couple of differences. Even without it you should see the LCD blank on at least one of the turns which means it's sending signal to the port. The port may be damaged. You may be having an EDID problem (usually with Mac's), or if everything is brand new, a HDCP problem that is preventing the signal to be output because communication KEYS are absent. This usually only applies to HDMI signals but some new devices may be set to block analog output to digital receivers. Let me know how that goes. Is the LT new or old? What operating system? Later.
