The white smoke may have been caused by having water in the fuel, or fuel tank [due to condensation or exposure to rain and snow]. It may have been that the mower got tipped for cleaning purposes, blade inspection, etc. and oil from the low lying oil pan got into the piston.

Either way, I recommend installing a brand new spark plug and new gasoline [you can purchase a little gas siphoning hose for a dollar or so at any auto parts store] If you have gasoline left over in a can from last year it is safe to use it in your car as it mixes with lots of new gas, but not in your small mower tank as it is basically outdated fuel.

Your carbeurator is definitely gummed up. It should only take 2 or 3 pulls to be up and running.

The carb. needs to be removed and soaked in cleaner for three hours, and possibly rebuilt. If this not within your ability range you will be money ahead to go to a pro.

I would let the motor run for about a half hour to an hour it could be oil in your muffler if it is it will go away and not smoke anymore if it goes away then the next day you start it and it smokes again then goes away it is a valve seal if it doesnt go away it is either a bad head gasket (if its overhead valves) or a bad oil ring (sometimes they stick in the piston from sitting to long)

Briggs and Stratton running rich and smoking black.

Yes, black smoke is too rich, blue is oil and white is steam/condensation.

Surging is normally caused by air entering the inlet manifold or governor.

All Carburetors have adjustment
Needle height
Main Jet size
Idle Jet air control (often hidden under a silver disc).

WHY DOES WHITE SMOKE COMES OUT OF THE SIDE

If it's coming from around carburetor area than you most likely have a blown head gasket. It's building up to much pressure in block and its blowing out your vent tube.

My mastercraft riding mower runs for about 5 minutes and dies then a big cloud of white smoke comes out

Hello Alan. I'm George. Do a compression check on the engine. You didn't mention the type of engine but it should have around 90 PSI or more. If it doesn't, you most likely have a blown head gasket.
Good Luck and Thanks. George

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

My Troy Built Self propelled lawn mower has a oil leak which results in white smoke coming from it. What is causing it? I had it for 3 months.

Hi smithjazzy8...
Check your oil level, it sounds like it has got too much oil in the crankcase.
The oil level should be to the last two threads on the fill plug threads of the engine.
This is the main cause of white smoke coming from the exaust of the engine.
